Hey guys, I recently got a late 2008 mbp off trademe and It came with Lion installed, and I upgraded it to Mountain Lion, It is very good love it, but it has problems going to sleep. When I close the lid it goes into 'safe sleep' which is ok, but when i open up the lid i have to wait for the little loading progress bar to finish loading. I would like it to go when you open the lid, you go straight into what you left off with?? how do I fix this?? or is the what Mac os is calling 'sleep'?

I come from a Windows 7 computer so yer, But I chose a mac computer because of some of the programs on mac's are slightly better than the windows counterpart.

The loading progress bar indicates your computer is going into hibernate mode. Mine does that when the battery reaches a critically low threshold (usually 1%). Do you keep your MBP plugged in when you put it to sleep?

yes my one also does that, but I usually have it plugged in to the power, and it also does this.

Probably not a direct fix for your problem, but I use a small program called InsomniaX which disables the behaviour that puts the macbook to sleep/hibernate when you shut the lid, which would get around your problem

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0


Change the 0 to a 3 to revert back to the old behaviour.

Once you have turned off the safe sleep mode you can also delete the cache file it creates to dump memory contents to

I forget where its located but you should be able to google for it.

Does it have an after market SSD? This was one of the settings people used to enable/disable in order to save space on the small (at the time) SSD sizes.

If it's nothing to do with that you can try an SMC Reset - there's a tutorial on the Apple website for that, just Google it.

@gehenna It doesn't have a ssd
and @Satire Ive tried that, but all it does is screw up and makes my mac come up with please restart your system black, screen thing

Reboot and hold Cmd-Opt-P-R at the chime. Keep holding until it chimes twice. This will reset the PRAM to default, which I *think* is where the safe sleep mode is stored.

Thanks that SMC fix work's a Charm, It works like its suppose to.
