Hi all.

this may have been asked before, but my search turned up nothing...

I have just purchased a Mac and would like to know if there is a Mac equivalent of 1-click DVD to iPod that is a windows-only program.

I want something simple and easy to use, that literally does what it says.

Also - is DVD43 compatible with Mac, or is there something similar?

How simple is handbrake to use?

I literally want to click and walk away...not that bothered how long it takes to burn...just needs to be simple. Like me.

Very simple. You load disc, choose what format you want to convert to then click start. Did I mention it is free?

Handbrake is awesome. Choose your source. Choose your output preset. That's about it.
Have always had good results. Is not literally one click, but very easy to use.

You will need to download vlc as well if you are using handbrake to rip commercial DVDs .

Hi,

Have had handbrake for ages. Now have Ripit, which is really good. Doesn't compress the file, just removes the DRM. I then hand it over to turbo.264hd

Sometimes I still use Handbrake, just remember that if there are 99 titles on the DVD, open it in DVD Player and check the title for the actual movie. In handbrake then open the dvd "title specific"

Thanks all. I've been told about handbrake before but never used it.
What is the best solution for overcoming DRM? Currently I use DVD43. Or is that what Ripit does?
I am simply format-shifting DVD's I own so I can watch them on my iPad on the bus to and from work...

Jon - particularly good advice re opening in DVD player first...that's the sort of stuff that I haven't had to worry about before.

While on the subject of Handbrake - subtitles: how well does it handle them?

1-Click was good for simplicity, but it didn't handle subtitles well - basically, you either had them or you didn't. It couldn't embed the code in the video output file to have it as an option while viewing - which meant for movies where there are moments of foreign language that is subtitled for effect (a-la Scifi movies when aliens speak), you simply had to guess at what was being said. Or you could rip it with subtitles being shown for the whole movie...quite annoying and not ideal.

Handbrake will let you choose the subtitle track,

You will find that there is a "foreign language track" on pretty much every DVD which means you only get subtitles when the language spoken is not "english"or what ever other language the movie is spoken in, so you don't have to have them on all the time,

Ripit removes the DRM and turns the DVD into a mountable DVD package, I am pretty sure there will be a coupon somewhere for you to get a discount. On my version there is an experimental compression button, but I have so far resisted the urge to push that.

Handbrake can remove the DRM if you have libdvdcss package installed. This used to come installed in VLC and Handbrake, but they have separated them for legal reasons. Just google the package above and look for instructions for where to put it.

Handbrake is a transcoding option, so is slower, but it results in mp4 containers (or others) which you can then just copy across to your ipad. These containers are smaller than the original dvd size due to the h.264 encoding of the file rather than raw digital video (HB uses the x264 algorithm). Handbrake is also good because it lets you compress to a standard size or standard quality.

I have a turbo.264hd, which I use for my DVDs and with eyetv. It offloads the compression part to a usb dongle, which is good for converting freeview recordings.

I use goodplayer on my ipad, lets you browse a NAS and download or stream videos without transcoding.

I find Filebrowser a slightly better app than goodreader for stream video to an ipad, but both do the same job....

Filebrowser certainly looks a bit better (but still looks a bit naff UX wise).

The most annoying thing is that none support AFP, which I find for streaming between an AEBS hosted NAS and my Macbook works a lot better than SMB...
