The continuing saga of me buying a macbook I think I have convinced myself to get a new one in doing so I came across the macrumours site that suggests there is a new model due out "soon". Anyone got a better defintion of "soon" like when?

Soon, probably be released at the same time as osx mavericks. I thinking September. The only thing new in them would be the haswell chip, without much of a performance boost but better battery life. Also will include 802.11ac wifi, faster ssd.

Which IMO makes it worth waiting for, will also have HD5000 integrated graphics for the graphics switching.

My 17inch macbook pro is a dear 6 years old now (gen 2 release from early 2007).
Are the late models able to 'cook eggs' on the bottom panel still?
Im finding a lot of heavy flash and java sites get my fans cranking and the bottom case hot enough to get the mrs to make an egg hahhahah.

I should upgrade ram beyond the 2GIG I have.... but meh... im thinking of going back to windows.

We could all speculate until we're black and blue about when the next model might be due, and based on previous years' releases some of the speculation could be fairly well reasoned, but the fact is though none of us know - only Apple knows when it'll be released.

I don't know exactly what your needs are for a laptop, but if you need one now then get one. If you can afford to wait a few months to see what happens then do so.

Having said that I can't see there being such a massive difference between the current model and the next one that you'd have regrets buying one now and not waiting. Of course I'm just speculating though!

yep 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo

I doubt Id be able to upgrade to the next MAC OS later this year. No point investing in RAM and an SSD just to run windows ! (better off buying a new laptop).

Will see how many more KMs I can get out of this aluminium beast. (on my 3rd battery and this 3rd battery is a cheap n nasty non apple... it could well be the sword to end this great run oneday).

Flash etc is poorly coded for OSX, but it's also very probable that you have about a socks worth of lint inside the machine causing it to heat up very quickly.

If you are comfortable, find instructions online and take the machine apart, remove dust from the heatsync and replace the thermal paste. You will probably need several kinds of screwdrivers, Artic Silver thermal paste and half a day.

C2D is an old but capable chipset, I own a black Macbook that I gave to my parents (they use it with a display + keyboard attached) and think its brilliant, people still buy them as well.

Compatible RAM will now be too expensive to justify, but you will often find that the machines support a lot more RAM than Apple claims.

For a laptop you'd best wait for Haswell later this year which will be released sometime and will be a significant improvement for battery life, probably the next milestone in pushing portable device sales

Are you talking about the cMBP (classic/unibody) or the rMBP (retina)?
There is a school of thought that suggests the cMBP won't be getting updated and might even get phased out (but perhaps not this year).

The Retina models are likely to get Haswell, perhaps in the September / October timeframe as already mentioned. If you are worried about buying new and then the new model comes out, reducing the value of your recent purchase, then get a refurbished MacBook Pro instead of new.

I have pondered opening up the case and having a clean out. Im sure its filled with lint, hair, food etc etc.

If anything, this beast is still good for web surfing and general tasks.
I might just be inclined to upgrade to a new model next year (7 years is about the average I have PC's / Laptops for).

Ok after all that info I went a diffrent way well not completly

I picked up MacBook Pro 13.3" Processor: 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (P8600) A1278 4 meg ram 250gb drive

My thinking was that this will give me a chance to play around with the changeing to mac idea without a high investment. If I get hooked I will flog this one off and buy then the new models should be upon us. Hopefully that makes sense to more people other than just me!

So now beef the ram to 8 meg and the drive can I put a ssd in this machine?

Take a look at ifixit.com for the steps to replace the hard drive.

Once that is done you will need the disks that came with it(or create a bootable disk of mountain lion install do a google search for steps) hold down option when you boot and select the DVD disk.
When in the installer chances are that you will need to format the SSD you can do that through disk utility which is in the menu bar. Make sure that you use Mac OS Extended (Journaled). After that you should be able to to install OS X

apparently the ram config in the mac is 2 x 2 meg
If i want to up to 8meg do you know if i buy it in 2 x 4 or 1 x 8 ?
and finally is there somewhere that is known for good prices on mac stuff

It's up to you it will take it in either option. Most of the time it will be cheaper to by 2 at 4GB rather than 1 at 8GB, but if you want to have the option to upgrade the RAM again then the 1x 8GB is most cost effective.

Only thing is to make sure that the speed is the same.
If your using mountain lion(OS X 10.8) if you click on the Apple logo in the menu bar -> About Your Mac -> More information -> Memory it should tell you what sort of RAM you need.

To be safe it will cost more but there is Apple memory in most cases PC RAM will work just fine but you may as well play it safe as there are some differences between them. I have found that it cost less to get it from Amazon(however they wont directly ship it here) in the past but I was getting 2x 8GB modules so just take a look around.
