I have a 2010 MBP which I believe will not boot from usb. I would like to do a fresh install of mavericks. What is my best option here? I'm thinking it may be to go buy a dual layer dvd somewhere and burn the mavericks image file to that. Or was sort of considering doing an upgrade install from 10.8 then doing an iCloud remote wipe, but not sure if that leaves me with a blank OS or no OS at all.

So the DVD-ROM in the MBP is not working?

You should be able to boot from USB. I created a Mavericks USB installer by following the steps laid out in this article

The script that gets run in Terminal does it all for you, including making the drive bootable.

Rom drive works, but pretty sure I'll need a DL-DVD which I don't have around here.

Thanks, I was always of the impression only Macs that didn't ship with a ROM drive could boot to usb.
