SO: who has upgraded to Mavericks?

I was pleasantly surprised to find out it is free, and I didn't run into nearly as many issues with download time as a lot of other people seem to (even after switching to Orcon Unlimited yesterday - thanks Orcon!)...

It downloaded simultaneously on both of our MacBook Air's in about 90 minutes, and we also upgraded 2 iPads and 2 iPhones while Mavericks was on it's way....so not a bad use of bandwidth!

I like it a lot, it's continuing on the "refinement" path that Snow Leopard started down. Some of the new features are great - in fact I'm working on 2 displays now and the ability to change Spaces on each display separately is FANTASTIC!

I'm yet to dig too deeply into features but so far I'm liking it a lot. My MacBook Air (mid-2011) feels much more responsive in some of the apps I use daily (Office, Evernote, Safari/Chrome, Omnigraffle, etc), and I like the visibility over power usage on an application by application basis in the Battery applet.

What are your thoughts? Found anything cool?

If you use Gmail with Mail.app, prepare for a lot of pain. It's making me seriously consider AirMail, now.

Installed on iMac and MacBook Pro - no issues. My old MacBook Pro (2009) is running faster in general. Together with all the other software that was updated took approx. 90 minutes - both machines done at the same time with MacBook a bit slier than the iMac.

No problems.

Main changes noted in the Calendar and the addition of iBooks and Maps.

Yes been running the Beta version for a while and now running the free upgrade :)

WARNING!!

If you use your Mac to connect to SMB shares on Server 2008 (and a few other NAS) you will no longer be able to access them when you upgrade to OS X Mavericks. This problem has been bought on by their implementation of SMB2. I alerted Apple to the fact via a bug report on the developer site but nothings been done about it. I've sent them a few crash reports which they asked for so I guess eventually they will sort it.

However there is a workaround for now!

Found that by forcing the connection to SMB1 the problem is fixed. Solution posted here by Michael Larsen.

Is that just limited to Finder accessing the shares, i.e. would Path Finder (Which I use anyway) be a solution or is it a problem at the OS level.

Strange that they'd release with a big whole like this one, especially given their focus in the last few years on boosting AD compatibility.

OR are they ignoring it because this is something MS should be resolving by implementing the newer tech on their server side via an update or role?

Also I don't get the snappier Safari comment?

Yes, upgraded yesterday morning. One thing I have noticed is the system uses more Ram than it used to. Calendar looks way better without the leather.

The upgrade was pain free and did not take long.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I use Finder / Connect to server via the SMB://server/share method and also couldn't connect to the Intranet shares using https://server/share either.

Can you test to see if you can connect to a server 2008 share via Path Finder?

Yep I can take a look later today or tonight once I'm back in the office.

I wonder if you can connect via Terminal too? Would be good to isolate this to being either a Finder or OS issue. If you can get around it that'd be a small win.

There was an app out a while ago too called Sharepoints (I think - from memory). It was a "better" way to manage file share locations in Mac OS a few versions ago, and I'm not even sure if it still exists or is supported on Maverics (or 10.8-10.7 either), but it was great at getting to hard to reach places.

Its a meme that has done the rounds on the Mac sites for years.
After every OS update someone would post that it has made "Safari seem snappier"
it pretty much became self fulfilling after a few years,

My Outlook 2011 disconnects from the server as well...same time as the https: mounted share drops out. I can fix the connection without a restart by restarting the ethernet and or WiFi connection. Major problems and that first fix I was talking about, didn't actually keep working for longer than about an hour.

Installed on Girlfriends 13" MBP late 2009.

Doesn't seem a lot different, I guess I will find out pretty quickly if there are any major problems, when she calls and starts complaining.

Haven't noticed a practical example of this yet, but I've just enabled iStat Menu's Memory menubar applet to keep an eye on it and see if I notice anything. There are some major and fundamental changes to memory management in Mavericks though, so it might be manifestation of that.

There's no problem with the system using RAM. More RAM used = less stuff has to come in from disk = faster and more energy-efficient system. Apps can and do mark temporary data as "purgeable" so the OS can still find more memory when it needs it.

If you install iLife from DVD and then run Software Update, it'll let you "redeem" iPhoto and iMovie into your account. You'll get the latest versions and will be able to install them on other systems. Apparently that works with iWork 09 too, but I only have 08.
