Heya guys,

Anyone know or have some experience with software I can use that will keep folders in sync.

Basically I have an external hdd that I want to sync with my desktop photo folder. Obviously I only want it to recognise the changes and sync them.

I've been using Synchronize! Pro X which is nice and simple and works well ... I don't know if it's still made for newer versions of Mac OS X though.

Ahh cool thanks - It should do the trick - it's such a simple task that I don't really want to have to pay $30 to do what I'm doing. Hopefully after the 30 days the free version will work ok - otherwise I will just revert to copying the whole folder over again...

i used to use robocopy on my windows pcs. it is command line but once you get the options right you can make a batch file and run it. it can figure out what is the same and what is now and only copy the new bits

we use that at work to sync folders, we just have batch files setup to do it

FreeFileSync.

Completely free and does a great job. I've been using it for about 2 years now.

My favorite is Superduper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/superduperdescription.html

Use it for backups before big upgrades of OS-X, and it also works a charm to copy and/or sync folders.

The nice thing about using it for big backups is that you can have it make the disk you are backing up to bootable, and it can also shut down your machine when its finished (nice to be able to save some on the power bill for those big long backups).

Given that most people in NZ doesn't have unlimited bandwidth, syncing your files from your computer to your HD via peer-to-peer does not seem like a brilliant idea.

In Linux I use rsync. In Windows I use robocopy part of a Windows administration pack of sorts I downloaded once (free).

Both are command line, I just double click the icon on my batch file and it only updates what needs to be updated.

Both cost me nothing. They're not a simple solution if you're a GUI person, but they don't cost a cent.

Dropbox uses LAN if available, otherwise WAN. Microsoft Skydrive used LAN when it was Live Mesh, but no more...
