When I put in a flash drive for example in my iMac ( late 2011 running Mavericks) other drives will spontaneously disconnect with the accompanying message they have been removed incorrectly. These include powered drives like WD or Seagate.
Any ideas why this should happen? I have Googled without success.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Exceeding the total power draw for all the devices perhaps. Some devices require more than the 500mA standard current, which the iMac will supply, but probably not to all devices at the same time. Try Apple Menu -> about -> More Info -> System Report -> USB to see the power requirements of each device.

Also try different combinations of your external hdd drives to find out if one might be spitting the dummy on the rest for some reason.

I am not using any proprietary dive software. It is any combination of drives. It has 4 ports, most recent had one powered drive plugged in s WD 2TB then plugged in a 16 gb flash drive and the WD immediately disconnected

The two external powered drives report they require 0 power of the 500 USB allocation
