Hi.

I have an aging Seagate 1TB HDD that holds the vast majority of my photos, movies and music, plugged into my iMac (2012 21.5" running latest OSX)

It's started randomly ejecting itself, which leads me to believe it's dying.

I went out and bought a new Seagate 2TB HDD to use, but have concerns over how to transfer the data across as an exact mirror of what I have, as the aforementioned HDD keeps ejecting, so it's unlikely it'll stay connected long enough to transfer the data with a standard copy/paste.

I have a concern that it may just die altogether and I may lose the data on there for good.

Any ideas?

Either use carbon copy clloner, or try using disk utility to create an image of the device (as opposed to the volume) as that may be quicker and get data befor it dies.

Ok I will ask the obvious question.... Your backup copy is where? :)

You probably should have bought 2 drives to replace it, so you can avoid this potential problem again,

Also please tell me your 1TB is USB3. because if its only USB2, you are gonna have to prey it holds up for a fair while, as to copy 1TB at 30MB/s is around a 9 hour copy at the best of times..

The ejecting of Ext USB drives is a OS X issue and not necessarily an failing USB drive. I was having this issue when I plugged in a new HDD. I disabled the Web Cam and this seemed to stop this from happening. Apples a bit stingy with regard to power allocation to USB
