My data usage has gone through the roof and seems to stop if i switch my MAC off.

I've installed little snitch and can't see anything unusual happening. Also installed Sophos AV and did a full scan with nothing detected.

Does anyone know of any other good malware scanners that will run on 10.6.8? I have used adware medic before which fixed a mates browser problem.

As a last resort am prepared to wipe and re-install....If I backup using time machine, then install Yosemite fresh and restore my data for backup will i also restore any malware if present?

Check iCloud for backup/syncing first.

there's not really enough in icloud to produce this kind of sustained uploading - if it was it would have been over in a day.

do you know what the actual process is called in little snitch so i can check?

thanks - but only available to 10.7 upwards.

guess i could install yosemite fresh, restore from time machine then install and run malwarebytes as a precaution.

Can you take a look in Activity Monitor under network and sort by sent bytes.

This should tell you what is uploading the data.

If iCloud gets stuck on something corrupted it will keep on trying.

Other thing to check is an outgoing email that is stuck.

geocom: Can you take a look in Activity Monitor under network and sort by sent bytes.

This should tell you what is uploading the data.

In activity monitor, there is only a network button at the bottom that just summarises network activity. I have selected all processes from the dropdown at the top but cant see a sent bytes column to add, there is only Sent Message and Received Messages? Am i in the right place?

Activity Monitor seems to be different on 10.6.8. On my yosemite laptop Sent/Received Bytes is present by default, in 10.6.8 there is only Sent Messages and Received Messages which are additional columns that can be added.

Ok thought it came in 10.6 must be the next version.

You could also try an older version of iStat menus as it has a network monitoring ability.
10.6 I think should work with iStat menus 4.22

Although it may be easier just to go to Yosemite at this point.
