I've bought a belkin cable to connect my macbook pro to our TV HDMI
the cable says 'video / audio' but when I connected it this morning only video was coming through - no sound was coming through the TV.
I checked my sound output in system preferences and it says 'headphone'

Is there anything I can do to get the sound to come on to the TV?

Try pressing option-volume key or option clicking the sound icon in the menu bar

Are you using a DisplayPort to hdmi adaptor? I'm not sure displayport carries the sound, I know you stated the cable says video audio but I don't think you can get audio through it, only if you had actual hdmi port on mac

the cable is a 'Mini Display Port To HDMI' and on the top of the box it says Audio Video
I asked the man in the shop and he pointed to the 'audio video' on the box and said it would work...... I'm just a bit bummed out that it doesn't

IIRC MacBook Pro models from 2010 onwards support audio over MDP so theoretically you shouldn't be having any issues. Perhaps it's the TV with issues?

Yeah there's usually a setting on the TV to receive both Audio and Video over HDMI, or split it so only video is HDMI and audio inputs via another method (like Optical).

If you've checked the Sound preference pane then it's likely to be the TV.

Is the Dongle a 3rd party or Apple official?

For what it's worth, my 3rd Party HDMI adapter transmits sound to TV perfectly. MacBook Pro Late 2011.

I had this issue with a 2010 Apple laptop.

For some reason, the audio connection wouldnt work. Turned out to be a combination of connecting to tv first then turning on the tv or a variation on that to get the tv to accept audio via mini display to HDMI adapter.
