Looking at Mac's for the first time. Normally a HP user.
Looking at a Macbook

What is the difference in real world performance that I might notice between the above three models (Saying if they all had 2GB of RAM) currently advertised at DickSmith an other places.

Also is there a 10.4 and a 10.5, and if so, is there much difference.

Black or white? Theres a big price difference.

Will it sync ok with my BB Curve?

Cheers

I'm no Mac user, but I'll answer as many as I can.

motorwayne: Also is there a 10.4 and a 10.5, and if so, is there much difference.

10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) are versions of Mac OS X, the operating system.

motorwayne: Black or white? Theres a big price difference.

Check the system components, they are different. Black has far more stuff (or better stuff) preinstalled in the laptop than the white ones. Apple has specifically done this.

The current macbook specs are really good. The only difference between White (middle config) and the Black is HDD disk space. The White one (middle config) is 160 GB and the Black one is 250 GB. But rest is same, 2.4 GHz and 2 GB RAM. They are good. I just got one.

Here are the bits I can see are different

Processor and memory

intel Core 2 Duo
  • 2.1GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
  • 800MHz frontside bus
  • 1GB (two 512MB SO-DIMMs) or 2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB
Standard

Storage

Storage

2.1GHz MacBook

  • 120GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive; optional 160GB or 250GB 5400-rpm drive4
  • 24x slot-loading Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
  • Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed; writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed; reads CDs at up to 24x speed; reads DVDs at up to 8x speed

2.4GHz MacBook

  • 160GB or 250GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive
  • 8x slot-loading SuperDrive
    (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW

    Maximum read: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM; 6x DVD-ROM (double layer DVD-9), DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW and DVD+RW; 24x CD

Whats the guts with the "Super Drive" v.s. the Combo Drive?

And..is the 2.16 model here the same as the DickSmith model here:? http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/47d8d64000e7676c2740c0a87f330706/Product/View/XC4516

What you  have compared is not White and Black, rather the basic White and the one I mentioned.

Look here at Apple store instead of DSE

DSE always seems to have last generation Macs in store for quite a while...

I had the 2.20GHz White, and then 4 days after purchase, the 2.4GHz models came out, so I returned the 2.2 and got the new one today.

The latest 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz are based on new 45nm CPU technology, and apparently the new 2.1GHz outperforms the old 2.2GHz (by a small amount), and the difference between the 2.20GHz and the new 2.4GHz is more than just 200MHz clock speed increase.

FSB is increased from 667 to 800FSB.

The 2.4 is snappy and responsive, I am booted into Vista on it right now, and it is FLYING along (although I don't boot into Windows much, since getting the first Macbook, I am an instant OSX convert (for my personal needs anyway).

Sweet!

Here is another curly one. Can I buy a Macbook in the States and bring it back here? The exchange rate suits getting a mate who is coming here in April. Is this a good option or is it better to buy here.

I think the 2.4 black is the one I want...black just seems a bit more bloke? Comments?

Cheers

Apple shops, or the internet, yes warranty is 12 months world wide, you will need an adapter for the charger plug, and pay
GST, on entry to NZ, if you declare it, it will still be probably cheaper, but not by as much...
