I have the mail to button in my toolbar. The one with an envelope on.

Hitherto, clicking it opened an email with the link to the page you were on, ready to address.

All of a sudden, sometime in the last month or so I think, it has ceased to function. It does absolutely nothing.

I tried removing it from the toolbar and putting it back - no change.

Any ideas?

What version of macOS are you running? As of macOS 10.12 Sierra which updated Safari to Ver 10.1 and Mail 10.3. In the latest version of Safari you have two ways of sending an email from within Safari. The first is via the "Share" button which is a vertical oblong box with an arrow pointing upwards. The second is the old envelope icon. If neither of these are working try one or all of the following.

1 - Quit Safari and Mail and 'Restart" your computer

2 - In Mail > Preferences > General > Default email reader: Mail or your preferred client

3 - Try this free program 'Onyx' which I have been using for years. It gives your OS a grease & oil change, tightens the nuts & bolts and clears the cobwebs away. I especially use it pre & post OS updates in conjunction with pre & post Time Machine and grandfather BACKUPS.

4 - Ensure Safari is 'Quit' then open Finder on the menu bar click Go > go to Folder > (copy or paste the following) ~/Library/Preferences/com.appleSafari.plist and move this file to the trash. You will loose all customisations in Safari Relaunch Safari and try mail again.

Cheers

Any luck in a cure for your Safari Mail button problem?

There is a Share button in Safari now.  Email this Page is one of the share targets.

Strange I have both the Share button and the email button. Of course there is File > Share > Email this page and the keyboard ⌘ I

Oh yep I just customised the toolbar and added a Mail button, and it works fine too.  I suspect what you mentioned about the default mail app is on the money.
