Having no knowledge whatsoever of anything Apple, I have been asked about a shonky Magsafe 2 45 watt power supply module for a MacBook Air. The cord is badly frayed and the PSU seems to be operating intermittently. The cord has a weird entry point into the white box. Is this something I could repair or is it some kind of hidden Apple trap? Does anyone have any of these PSUs they would like to sell?

Your options are most likely these:

* Purchase an overpriced supply from Apple.
* Purchase from eBay and receive unknown quality components and dubious non-apple design.
* Open up that PSU box without damaging it, repair the cable entry and glue it shut.

Since you’re repairing a PSU which has mains in it, you should consider the legal issues regarding these sort of repairs, especially if you’re doing it for someone else.

You also probably shouldn’t do what I did with my old MacBook Pro and that was to join the magsafe cable to a spare HP notebook supply of suitable voltage and power rating.

i have repaired many apple psus and the hardest part is opening them in one piece as they are all glued together, im guessing the frayed cable is where it enters the psu?

Assuming its frayed at the psu end, if you have enough patience you can cut away the flexible grommet part and try to salvage enough length to repair. I managed this once for an old charger that is still working today. I personally wouldn't bother trying to open it.

Don't know how urgent it is but 1-day seem to sell legitimate ones every now and then at a more reasonable price.

I would never recommend purchasing an "Apple" anything from eBay as there are constant fakes being sold all the time. Also opening the MagSafe PSU is extremely painful as it is all glued together.
