I need to shift my images off the SSD in my iMac due to space issues.

I use Lightroom and need to maintain workflow speed when opening the images.

I presume Thunderbolt would provide the fastest connection. Does anyone have a recommendation as to a drive? Within reason, price is less important than quality and reliability.

Amazon have a Samsung thunderbolt 1TB external SSD for an eye watering US$450 if you prefer.

The Thunderbolt one would be ideal but for the fact that my iMac has the earlier Thunderbolt connector which is not compatible with this newest drive. I'd need to replace the iMac, which I will later this year.

I'll go with the T5 version I guess unless there's a recommendation for anything else.

Don't forget T5 comes only with USB-C and USB style connectors only (2 cables in the box). I have had the 500GB one for awhile now and it copies files at amazing speeds. (Well fast enough not to be sitting around all day :))

HGST drives from Amazon would be a good bet, if you can find one with the interface you need. All the internal spinning drives I've purchased in the past few years are HGST and work well, BackBlaze rates them as the most reliable in a data center environment. The only drives that've ever failed for me are Seagate, but all drives fail eventually so you need multiple copies in multiple locations.

I am sure I won't be! My iMac is only USB 3.0 not 3.1 so I won't get the max the SSD is capable of, but I am sure it will still be fast and when I update the iMac later in the FY it will be even better!

Nice, best part is the prices have dropped considerably since when I bought.

That is what really annoyed me. I believed they dropped by 40-50% back in May 2019. I brought a 500gb Samsung EVO 860 internal SSD for $300, two weeks later it was on sale for less than $200 on Amazon.

I guess us early adopters do pay the price, unfortunately there is more to come as SSD eg NVMe get large in size and lower in price.
