Can a kind and patient Apple expert help a clueless one through the maze?

I know my way around Windows but am trying to help someone with a MacBook issue and neither of us understand a thing about Apple. The problem is that SBS IPTV on Kodi refuses to work though other channels work fine. Something I noticed while fumbling around is that connection permission requests sometimes pop up when trying to access a URL. For example, "application x wants to connect to url y on port 443". You are then given a number of options to proceed. One of the option combinations allows you to deny the request forever. I suspect, and would like to check, if this has accidentally happened with SBS, but I don't know how to access whatever produces this pop-up. Is this a firewall message? Any help would be much appreciated.

Could be...

You can check what it currently blocked via the Firewall settings, which are under security in system preferences,- which is usually in the dock, or you can get to it from the "apple" menu

You might want to see whether "Little Snitch" has been installed. I've never used it myself, but I believe that it can display prompts like the one you're seeing.

Bingo. I was searching on-line and discovered Little Snitch. I remembered seeing it on the Mac and not understanding what it was for. I went back to it and once I knew what to look for configuration was easy. SBS had indeed accidentally been turned off forever and that was blocking it. As soon as I changed the setting all was okay again.

Thanks everyone for the help. I managed to work it out myself this time but I really appreciate the willingness to lend a hand. For me, the Mac is just a big black box I would rather avoid. Thanks again.

The pop-up message you describe is probably from the firewall as @wellygary says. However, it be a red herring - those firewall settings are only for incoming connections, and a client requesting a video stream would probably present as an outgoing connection.

Can you describe more fully the setup - i.e. version of Mac OS, Kodi, how the addon is installed, what services work, what don't and any other troubleshooting you have done so far.

EDIT: I see all is solved. Good work.

I'd recommend getting rid of Little Snitch, it's a pointless annoyance

It sure is, but not my computer, thank goodness. I always wondered what all those stupid pop-ups were about.
