When browsing, I used to be able to hit the back button and Safari would return to the cached previous page without reloading it.

It now seems to have changed default to reload every time and it's annoying. Does anyone know how to make it revert to the previous way? If it is relevant it does it whether you're using back or forward.

What version are you running? I've just clicked around a couple of sites in 13.1 and Back is still occurring instantly.

Seems to work fine for me too. Any extensions/add ons or similar running?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
