I don't have much experience with Apple OS but I need to set up a simple email client for someone non-technical. It will only be used for 1 Gmail account so multiple accounts and fancy features are not needed, just something that collects and lists emails, has a simple reply feature, and isn't webmail. What would be a good free client for this use case?

Edit: The user has been using Opera Mail on Windows and is familiar with that.

What about the built in Mail app?

I don't know anything about it, except it exists. I can try that but I just wondered what others think since I don't have much Apple experience.

As above, Apple systems don't need to be tinkered with to get basic stuff like that working. Just use the mail client supplied with Mac OS or iOS (it's unclear which you are using).

Long time Apple user. The Apple mail App can do, iCloud mail, Exchange/Outlook, Gmail without hassle. It is also in for a big update when MacOS 11 (Big Sur) drops later this year circa October.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Sorry, could be either a Mac or a laptop. I assume a laptop would run the Mac OS but I'm not sure. Is iOS only for mobile devices like the ipad?

If it is on MacOS (A Macbook, iMac, etc). then I would highly recommend Mailplane for use with Gmail. https://mailplaneapp.com

If it's iOS (iPhone, iPad), then use the Gmail app from Google.

For gmail I just use https://mail.google.com in a web browser

I don't see the point in having a separate email app running in the background polling for email, when you most likely already have a browser window open

Recommend Apple's native Mail app on any platform. Gmail app a close second for iPad only but try the native app first.

Advantage of using a Mail app (as opposed to web interface) is you have offline access to email which may be an advantage for OP.

please please please dont use the built in app for accessing a gmail account. there is an excellent gmail app for ios that will work far far better than the built in app as it will not be reliant on imap and all that old old retired sh1t.

He we go:

How to set up an email account for the first time, or add another email account.

Add an email account to Mail on your Mac

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
