I have no Apple experience but have inherited a Macbook Air running El Capitain. I have been feeling my way around and have set up an email account but I can't access the settings to change it to leave messages on the server. According to on-line instructions it should be easy to bring up the settings menu, but all I get is the account name, email address and password. I cant find any way to get to the actual setting. Can someone help please?

I think you will find for what you are looking for by opening the mail application and then selecting the option "preferences" that is in the  drop down from the Mail label (top left of screen). This will give you another Accounts view with various tabs and options to explore.
