My wife has bought her friends old iPhone - it's only a couple of years old (I forget the model number)

the friend has couriered the phone and wife now has it - she will probably have to wait until Vodafone store opens in L2 (Auckland) to change the Sim card over

A message came up on the new phone saying she can just push a button to transfer all her info / data / apps from her iPhone 6 to the new phone

my question is - does she need the sim card from her old iPhone 6 to go in her new phone before she can transfer everything over?

any advice would be appreciated

No she does not need to switch the sim card to do the transfer. Transfer will complete fine - just wont have any mobile connectivity. Can still work fine on wifi.
Just remember when the data on the new phone will only be as current as when the transfer was done meaning that if the transfer was complete and she now has two phones - old one with sim and she gets a txt message etc. - those wont make be on the new phone.

I'm not sure why you need to visit a store for the SIM, both phones take the same size SIM, pop the SIM out of the iPhone6, and into the new iPhone, do the data transfer, sign in with her Apple ID and she's good to go.

Remember to sign out of Find My iPhone on the old phone before you reset it (after you've done the transfer), then you can still sell the old one (iPhone6 will still get some money).

This has to be one of apple's better moves,

Allowing free temporary iCloud space to do a backup/restore to a new device,

if you have a fibre connection this has pretty much got to be the best way to go....

Last phone swap I did between an iphone 6s plus to and iphone 8s plus all I had to do is lay the phones side by side with each other and it directly transferred everything, assuming over Bluetooth.

Was really amazed at how super simple apple made it

I suspect it starts up some form of background Wifi transfer between the two devices,

Pretty sure that Bluetooth's data rates would make transferring 100+ GBs painfully slow..

Mum got a new iPhone a couple of months back, and even I was amazed at how simple the transfer of all apps & data was from her old one!

I'd set aside half a day just in case it went pear shaped, but was pleasantly surprised at the process.

People love to hate Apple for various reasons, but you can't argue with a great user experience like this.

Ok so wife has done the transfer over to the new phone - SIM card was pretty straight forward
But it’s taken about 4 hours so far and many of her apps aren’t coming up - they are still in black
A message comes up saying there’s a data breach and she needs to change the password on all the apps (that she’s downloaded) like sky tv, my food bag, Fitbit, covid tracer ...etc.... she has about 20 apps that are in black and they have a circle going around that says ‘loading’ and have been like that for hours

Do we have to change the password on all the apps??
We have most of the same apps on my phone and the iPad- so changing the passwords would affect them too?

If anyone knows how to get all the apps going without having to change the passwords or any other advice that would be much appreciated

Thanks
