Since my software updated to 10.5.7 I occasionally get the Mac equivalent of the "Blue Screen of Death"
- except its a black screen in several languages telling me I need to restart my computer by holding down the power button
I have since found out this is called a "Panic Kernel"
Somehow some bit of code has become corrrupted in the OS.
How do I fix this?

Below is the error report it generates

Hi Ando,

This is indeed a Kernel Panic. Kernel meaning the Mac OS Kernel, i.e. the base level of the OS.
You're correct in that this is the equivalent of a BSOD, these do occur sometimes, and it will bring down the whole machine and requires a hard reboot.

The dump you've provided gives the clue, "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: iTunes" suggests iTunes was the application at fault. Were you doing anything particular at the time? I.e. syncing an iPod or something?

Have you updated iTunes to the latest version too?
There's a couple of things you can do to try to prevent this from happening, but it may be a bug in the iTunes app, or in the 10.5.7 OS.
I'd suggest performing the Verify Disk command in Disk Utility, then the Repair Permissions command too.
Then check software update, to see if all your apps are up to date.

It could just be a random event, even the Mac OS sometimes crashes for no apparent reason.
Check the things above, and if it happens regularly, especially when you're doing the same thing as before, there may be a bug in there somewhere.

Cheers,
Joseph.

Thanks jofizz
My nightmare continues. After doing a bit of my own research the apple website suggested I try re-installing OS X. As I did this Kernel Panic happened aain
Now when I try to start up, even in safe mode (with Shift Key held) I get the spinning gear and nothnig happens. Left it for an hour and still no action.
So tomorrow off to Magnum Mac. I just hope I have not lost anything. have a Time Capsule so back up should be ok - its the photos I most want to preserve.
Regarding the initial source of the issue - it forst seemed to happen when my wife was syncing her ipod, so I reckon you could be right about iTunes being the culprit.
I was trying to update itunes earlier today before the "Big Crash" but the Kernel Panic happened half way through the download.

Ahh, not so good!
If a Kernel Panic occurs during an OS installation, i.e. when booted from a known-good OS, these the issue could possibly be a dodgy RAM module, perhaps the hard drive, or even some other component.
Good work for having a backup!

You can try booting with the OS X install DVD in the drive and holding down D to run the hardware diagnostic tool. Newer models have it built in, older ones will need the DVD.

Zapping the PRAM fixes a multitude of problems too. I wouldn't do it until after a diagnostic test though.

Update
Got my mac back. It was dodgy ram
All better now. RAM was replaced under warranty, but they charged to reinstall the OS (a bit cheeky I thought)
Fortunately no lost data
