Hi
Looking to upgrade the memory in iMac 2.ghz Core 2 Duo. I am interested in experiences people have had upgrading to either 2 or 4Gig in terms of performance improvement. I am also interested in alternatives to the expensive memory from the Apple Store. I saw some 2gig Kingston sims for $107 and some cheaper Cosair sims (2 x 2 gig sims) for $150.

Back in the PowerPC days they had extremely fussy memory controllers, which isn't the case since the switch to Intel.

Use the Kingston Memory Configurator on Ascent's web page here: http://ascent.co.nz/Kingston.aspx

It will tell you the exact model of the Kingston ram which will work but also verify the specs if you find another brand cheaper.

It's much cheaper to use non-Apple ram.

The Corsair RAM I put into my last macbook was of higher quality than the Hyundai RAM I took out of it and yet despite being 4X the capacity, was worth about the same according to Apple. You pay mostly for the privilege of their logo that is printed on the packet when it turns up. They're the Tag Heuer of computers, they're good, but most of the cost is for the brand name.

As long as you use good quality stuff (so not AData) and they're matching pairs, then it'll be fine. Kingston or Corsair would generally be my brands of choice.

Some of the recent aluminium Macbook (Pros?) had issues with RAM types from memory, but iMacs will be fine. RAM is cheap, put as much in as you can afford.
