So the story goes something like this. Baked the firewire controller in my Mac Pro due mainly to my own stupidity, which has rendered it unbootable. Its the old school 1.1 Mac Pro, so well out of warranty. Would rather get the motherboard repaired if possible, as opposed to a replacement, as i'm not rolling in piles of money, and I've got it down to either The Core, or Giga Computers, who can both do logic board repairs, or replacement if it comes to that.

They are both in Auckland, and i'm in Christchurch, but i'm interested to know the groups opinion on the two companies. Which one should I go to?

Better off replacing the motherboard. Theres a very good chance neither of them will be able to repair it and they will charge you anyway. Just because they say logic board repairs doesnt mean they can repair most problems.
Gigacomputers will definately not be able to fix it.
I doubt the core will either.

Whats the history? How did you fry the firewire?
what symptoms are there now?

I'm guessing I fried it being clumsy/too forceful while trying to plug in a firewire device, at the back of the computer, when the plug was evidently round the wrong way.

After I did that, system profiler would show "unable to list firewire devices" regardless of what/if anything was plugged in. Could only boot from my default boot device, because pressing option made the computer hang forever, as it got stuck looking for firewire drives to boot off. Then after a PRAM reset, it wouldn't boot at all. Just get stuck at the white screen, looking for firewire devices. Its defiantly a hardware fault, not software.

I hope your wrong about gigacomputers, because I just sent the machine up to them on Friday. I certainly won't authorize them to do any repairs unless they can guarantee what they want to do will work, not wreck my logic board more.

unless its a simple plug needing to be replaced or capacitor then they will definately not be able to fix it. sorry... hope the inspection fee isnt too much. Did you send the whole laptop or just the board?

Its not a laptop, its a desktop. Mac Pro 1.1, and I sent the whole thing.

It looks like its going to cost me at least $900+ to get another logic board in from overseas, and swap it myself, so if they have good suppliers for parts, it may be cheaper for them to replace the logic board anyway.
