Hi guys so just doing a couple of tests just mucking around, wondering if anyone here has successfully installed OSX on a PC.

I am well aware it can be done, just wondering if it actually works properly (enough to actually use)

Thanks

Works fine as long as you have compatible hardware.

I've been using a "Hac" as my main machine for close to two years now. It's fine if your hardware's compatible and you have an understanding of how it all works. I highly recommend learning how everything fits together and what each individual hack does so that you can troubleshoot when things go wrong.

I use a Hackintosh on my Dell XPS mainly for  iPhone programming. It's not for the fainthearted. expect to spend about a week becoming an expert in a field you'll forget about by the end of the following week.

(But write everything down as each time Apple puts out a major OS update you may have to learn it all again!)

Good sites are InsanelyMac, IHackintosh, Netkas.org, Prasys.info

Built one rock solid OSX86 machine (based on a i7 930 & Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R) runs swimingly.
Using a Laptop is a different beat entirely though - you need to find specific models that mirror real world mac offerings. A lot of the popular netbooks are supported and have lots of coverage, other more high end machines are hit and miss and you're best to google around (just look for the name + OSX86).

If you're gonna do one from scratch don't cheap out and get a better mobo. Ideal GFX cards need to be reference boards (ie 2x DVI only) if you want to have niceties like dual head working.
Everything else except for the GFX card can be pretty much any brand/part.

A good start is this post -

Haha, so true. I imagine I know more bout OSX than most Mac owners now.

Side note: Installing a vanilla version (ie. only addition is the bootloader without any kernal modification[provided you have compatible hardware] - manual drivers for sound and video are fine, just don't touch the kernal if you can avoid it) will make it alot easier as all updates will work without any extra trickery though can't quite guarantee with future updates. Been all good so far up to the current version though.

Not sure if links are allowed here but lifehacker recently posted a tutorial

But yes I have a 99% working vanilla 10.6.4 install. Only thing not working is 5.1 analog but my optical out should fix that. (stereo audio works fine).

It is very hardware dependent so make sure you check the compatibility lists and try and buy cards / hardware similar to the existing macs out there

I've had it running on my old laptop which broke a while ago and I've had it running perfect on VMWare. I'd try it in VMWare first just to be sure unless your going to use a spare HD. I tried installing x86 on my newish laptop and that buggered the MBR so I didnt bother again on that. One of my mates has osx server installed on his pc though, runs perfect and even faster than windows server

VMware works quite well with great USB support and VMtools. Only caveat is that you can't get Quartz Extreme/OpenGL accleration in a virtual machine. So games will obviously not work but also things like FrontRow and the iPhone Simulator (some of your basic apps will work but any implementation with an OpenGL ES requirement will not).

Yup, I'm using an unmodified retail DVD, and sound and video hardware supported by Apple (ALC889a and Radeon 4870). No additional drivers needed whatsoever, and it's happily been updated through 10.6.4 without having to tinker :)

Have you done a search for divers on another computer? If you find them, download them on the working computer, copy to a flash drive and try it?
