Hi!

Okay, I know, upscaling is not as good as Blu-Ray. But in my case, Blu-Ray wasn't accepted as the basic support for our little movie. So I have to cope with DVD...

So I checked on the web to learn about different solutions, and I discovered the upscaling of some dvd players.

The simple, easy questiona I have are :

1. What is needed to encode a DVD so we can see it "upscaled" on these dvd players ?

2. Do we have to burn a normal DVD (720p) and the player upscale it automatically (1080p) ?

3. Is it compatible with Blu-Ray players?

DVD's are not HD. If you burn a DVD it's at a maximum of 576i.

Your player probably then has a setting to upscale.

Yup, most "upscaling" DVD players will refuse to play HD content. I have a Philips upscalling DVD that can play Divx etc via USB. It point blank refuses to play any resolution above 576p. I tried many variations of the HD content but it would only play at 576p.

My media player on the other hand plays HD content no provblem :D

If you must stick with DVD then why not look at a high bit rate like the "Superbit" DVD's

1) Nothing - if the player can upscale you dont have to do anything but provide it with the DVD - depending on the player you may have to tell it to upscale - but I would expect it works that out if it knows its connected to a TV with HDMI and the settings are better resolution than 576i.
2) As sbiddle says - 576i is the resolution of a standard DVD - you would need to write it to that spec. But the info tchart has supplied is well worth a look - supplying a higher bitrate would make the standard DVD look sharper/more detailed - so presumably should also make it look better when upscaled - but you would need to test it.
3)A blu-ray player should play any standard DVD

Sorry, I was wrong with my 720p. I didn't remember the standard was 576p.

The Superbit option seems interesting, but as wikipedia says : "In January 2007, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment discontinued its Superbit line in order to promote its Blu-ray Disc format.[2] "
I'm not sure it's a good idea to use some discontinued medias :P

And if, as robjb63 said, the normal dvd is automatically upscaled by players which support upscale, I think I will not go in further researches.

Weren't the Suberbit DVD's just the same, but recorded in the highest possible bit rate? Removing DVD extras and the like to give maximum space to the highest quality file?
