Hey guys,

Got my first Mac to take overseas, the 11" Macbook Air, I want to take some of my favourite NZ DVDs and to save space/because it doesn't have an optical drive I've created ISOs of them.

So I just wanted to know what is the best app to play a DVD ISO on Mac OS? Will I have to mount the image and use a player (I use Clonedrive/PowerDVD in Windows) or is there something that will play it directly?

I believe VLC should play a mounted ISO disk image fine.
(VLC should probably be your default media player for all video types, IMHO, it is the best).

+1 for VLC. However, I do find it stutters a touch on some files - maybe due to encoding? The same files didn't stutter on MPlayer. I read somewhere that the Mac version is not as well maintained as Windows/Linux ones. Not sure if that's still the case...

All in all VLC is my Swiss Army knife of media players.

Android user, software developer, a semi-typical (not a gamer) geek, and a Bernese Mountain Dog nut!

I believe I've managed to make this work by mounting the ISO directly in the OS and then pointing the built in DVD application at the ISO.

In the DVD Player -> File -> Open Media.

This was original an exercise to see if it could be done, so your combination of OS + Patches may or may not allow it ...

Cheers I got VLC and it's great but that would be a good option to try... what did you use to mount the ISO?

I think you can double click on the file in the Finder (pretty sure you can) ... otherwise you can mount using the Disk Utility (It's in the Utilities folder in your Applications Folder)

You can also download an ISO, and use Disk Utility to burn it to a CD. (I do this all the time when I need an ubuntu Live CD - just store a copy of the ISO on my MacMini and burn the disk off when required)

I'd suggest a different way... use Handbrake to pack your ISO into smaller yet high quality playable format. Carrying ISO on your MBA seems kinda heavy unless you have all your ISOs in an external HDD, even then, you have no need to carry ISOs everywhere you go.

Internet is my backyard...
