I have never owned a Mac before. I'm considering buying one with Tiger. I need it to run XCode 4 - and that requires Snow Leopard. Looks like the hardware will support it.

How is the upgrade performed, what is the upgrade path, and what are the costs?

I'm fairly sure that the Snow Leopard upgrade pack (I think it is around $60) will work on a Tiger Intel Mac,

You should be able to get it from any place you can get a mac, or order it from Apple's NZ website...

As usual a full backup is recommended before any OS upgrades...

Would I need the original Tiger discs at any stage during the upgrade?

Like if I do the full wipe and install instead of the straight upgrade?

Some of the macs I'm looking at do not come with the original discs for some reason.

You don't need the tiger disks if you get the Snow Leopard disks. After you do the install, run software update to get to the latest versions (no charge). Make sure you get an intel Mac. 20" CoreDuo machines can be had for under $500 & old MacBooks for less. Hope this helps.
