My external USB HDD has a wee (slight understatement) issue . . .

On plugging it in, one partition takes a few minutes to mount and when it does I get this:


Running disk verify/repair results in this whether run in OSX or recovery mode:



I can open the volume but it takes 30s to a minute for each folder to open and copy pasting off it seems to drop to a very very slow pace after about 112MB.

It isn't life or death stuff, that is all stored in multiple other locations, but it is still annoying . . .

Any suggestions? My plan is copy the stuff off then blow the partition away, the copying off bit is what I am hoping for a miracle cure for.

Sounds like either a bad block or a filesystem table corruption (or even corrupt inodes).

You nailed it though: copy stuff out and reformat it.

Yup ta, the copying off bit is what I am hoping for a sneaky method for that works faster than standard copy paste coz the screwed table is obviously screwing with the copy speed too . . .

Well, you could always use dd to do a binary dump onto an image. But that's likely to copy bad filesystem data, if there is any.

The screenshot says HFS+ volume. My guess is Win7 won't see it. (Mine used to, but not anymore)

I had a similar issue a while back. Took the drive to someone who has DiskWarrior - fixed perfectly.

Maybe try a couple of Apple Service Providers, see who has it, and how much they'd charge to run it.

From what I've seem Apple released HFS+ drivers for Windows 7, read only though - probably good to see if it would read faster than R/W.

Yeah ta that was suggested but steep for one time use (hopefully) on non-critical data.

Anyone in Wellington got it? :-)

Yeah, Bootcamp installed them by default. They actually do R/W (at least they worked on mine). Won't work if you have FileVault 2, though.

Thanks. Couple hundred GB, I have another drive I can copy onto. Hmmmm. Yes copying off is my aim, then blow away the partition.

When mac os x partitions go wrong, I tend to mount them in non journalised form, on *nix to recover the data usually works better.
