http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinations/nz/10358571/Auckland-The-worlds-friendliest-city

Travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler has named Auckland the friendliest city in the world.

This year's number one world ranking is a big jump up from Auckland number 16 spot in 2013.

Well, I wouldn't live there.

But that probably actually makes it friendlier... :D

Edit: I should add that although I currently live in Dunedin, I lived in Hamilton for around 20 years. The further south you go, the friendlier it gets.

I wouldn't agree in the slightest, Auckland reminds me a bit of Parisians which isn't a compliment, I wouldn't put Christchurch up there as a friendly city either though.
Helsinki was incredibly friendly when i went there, Florence was very friendly too. I'd rate both miles above Auckland or Christchurch. Can't really comment on other major cities, haven't spent enough time in them recently to judge.
Dunedin is pretty laid back and friendly.

A few years ago (pre smartphone) while in Auckland with a mate walking about trying to find a supermarket and a woman walking in the opposite direction with shopping bags in her hands walks by.
Me: "Excuse me miss"
Lady: No visible or audible response.
Me: "ah Excuse me"
Lady: "What! I'm listening!"
Me: "We're looking for a nearby supermarket could you please point us in the direction of one."
Lady: Points in the direction she's walked from (a 5 way intersection with no clear sign of a supermarket at all) and then carries on about her day.
Me: "Uh Thanks I guess"
I look at my mate, we both shrug, laugh and go hunting for the supermarket  which ended up being to the left and round another corner.

Disagree, Invercargill and Dunedin are two of the least friendly places I've ever been, Christchurch was really nice though.

I live in Invercargill and I wouldn't call it friendly.

We moved from Whakatane->Sydney->Central Coast NSW->Auckland. Perhaps our perceptions were jaded with our 8 years in Sydney (lovely views, but people can be quite rude and insular), but we've found Auckland to be very friendly for a city.

I would say that if you fit a profile of a straight, white person, small townsfolk are nicer, but if you fit outside that category, prejudice is more prominent in small towns.

I lived in christchurch for 7 years and downtown at night could be frightening, lots of drunk people, fighting, noise.

Dunedin - happy to walk around downtown without a worry.

(Lived in 5 countries and visited _many_ - first passport fill by age of 18 months - the joys of parents on overseas placements/rotations)

I think you will get friendly people any where in the world; and at the same time get a few people that are just (insert choice words here)

I haven't been in Auckland (outside the Airport) since 1989 (I was 8), and probably won't go there anytime soon (still cheaper to go to Australia)

Please explain further.  I have lived in Dunedin, wouldn't say it is very friendly, have never lived in Christchurch, but been there numerous times, I wouldn't say it is very friendly.  I do live in Invercargill, and would say it is easily more friendly that Christchurch and Dunedin.

Now, I haven't been to Auckland in years, and have no desire to go there, there are a number of places in the world that I would rather go to.
