I love my cats. They are wonderful, affectionate creatures. I would be lost without them. I genuinely believe that anyone left unmoved by cats is missing something in their soul.

I also understand that cats are predatory hunters. It is their instinct and purpose. They can’t help it. If they see something move that is smaller than them, they will jump on it.

I value most life, though I do have issues with wild rats and cockroaches. I certainly believe that birds, especially vulnerable native species, have a right to exist.

I like to cuddle my cats. They also enjoy it and respond accordingly. There is a lot to be said for snuggling up close to a warm, furry body. They comfort me when I am feeling lonely or depressed. I have never met a bird that enjoyed being cuddled, or would respond in kind. Birds can be very intelligent and entertaining, but they are not capable of providing that kind of love.

Cats do not belong in New Zealand, but neither do sheep or people. We have changed this place by coming here. Cats are part of the new reality we have created. Do they have any less right to be here than disappearing native wildlife? Can the right of one to exist be protected without sacrificing the other?

I do not think the issue should have to be a choice between one or the other. Each has something of great value to give. If there is a problem with cats, it is that irresponsible cretins dump them in the countryside to breed and fend for themselves. Animal species all over the world suffer from human avarice and stupidity. The slaughter of feral cats is not an answer. It is just another example of hammers seeing all problems as nails.

Cats do not just kill birds. As it happens, most of the birds my cats account for are blackbirds, neither native nor endangered, but most of their kills are mice and cockroaches. Yes, I have discovered that cats are brilliant at keeping down cockroaches in the house. Living in the countryside, we have always had terrible problems with these insects coming in from outside, especially with the firewood. Highly toxic poisons provide only brief respite, at who knows what cost to the environment. Since I adopted five feral cats and brought them indoors, the cockroach count has dropped to almost zero! Cats are wonderful in so many ways.

We cannot keep them indoors all the time, though. Cats born in the city can spend their lives quite happily in a room. Cats who have tasted freedom cannot. Locking them inside would be crueller than executing them. So we let them run free. They tend to stay near the house and often choose to come inside at night. They enjoy the warm fire. I have noticed that there have been no bunnies (another pest species) in the area for a very long time, though.

Are cats heroes or villains? A bit of both, I would have to say. They bring a lot of destruction to a lot of prey. They also bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. For the sake of their victims, they probably do need to be controlled in some way. For the sake of those who love them, I can only hope the response is controlled, humane and reasonable (for a change).

one of my fur monsters constantly murders things. She comes back with skinks and mice or rats and, very rarely, birds. Quite often I have to finish what she has started but I am glad she does it, when I moved in everyone was complaining about rats from a nearby garden...that problem is now well under control....all my neighbours love her for it.
She only has one eye so if a bird gets caught by an animal with no depth perception then it probably wasnt going to last long in the wild anyway.
My other beast couldn't catch a cold....I've seen her try and fail to catch a leaf, though she only has three legs so all is forgiven.

The law of numbers would indicate that the amount of vermin (and their potential offspring) killed by cats (which are neutered and spayed) would save more wildlife than if we were to let the vermin to their own devices.

To simply say eliminating cats = less birds killed is sooo narrow minded and not taking into account a greater understanding of how ecosystems work.

What would we be missing?

In a sense that I don't think you intended, cats move us all the time ... when we are unfortunate enough to step in their poop deposited all over our lawns and in our gardens I move very fast to get it off.

We are disturbed by several cats who dispute our property as their territory. Four have never been toilet trained properly - the breeder's and owner's faults - and all only seem to go home for to be fed. They are good at reducing the sparrow population, destroying seedlings, debarking vines, ripping open rubbish bags, even pooping inside our house, etc.

People seem to forget that people murder other animals all the time for food or other productivity purposes. Dogs can be just as bad as cats too. I barely let our cats outside these days, not because of birds, as they rarely catch them, but because of the traffic.

Cats won't usually deposit on the lawn, that is dogs, and cats will cover over their depsoits. I have owned both and cats are better behaved and cleaner from my experience. Dogs can smell, while cats don't smell at all. You can get cats spraying, but it is usually males, and when they feel territorial. But that is no different to some male humans :)

I agree, that is another side of it. Some people also cannot stand babies because they scream and mess themselves. Flying can be fun for some people, but not if you live next to an airport. And so on. There are two sides to every story. The stuff you describe must be incredibly frustrating, especially if you already don't care for cats, and I am truly sorry you have to put up with it. All I can say is that cats also have another side, and if you can't see that you are missing something worthwhile and that is very unfortunate.

I get the feeling i missed something to go with this topic...

but how can you say no to a cute little cat?

The kitten has found himself a new home since the Christmas tree arrived.

This cat kills practically only flys, he is very proud of himself. Those bird things, oh they are too much effort... he has too much selection outside!

Cat photos are always welcome. I didn't include any because there is already another thread of pet pix and I put mine there.

I don't suppose you saw the news clip a while back where the hero cat saved the young boy by wiping the floor with the much bigger dog. Who is whose food is a matter of debate but of course you are entitled to your opinion.

I like cats and have owned some in the past but I currently have two dogs, safely contained in the back yard when not on walks. Woe to any cat who strays under our fence, poor things.

I've always been a cat lover. My baby boy Blackie died in November and I've missed him so much. We had a really special bond together.

I seem to recall reading not so long ago that persons unknown in Raglan were killing cats in the misguided belief that this would help the native bird population. Actually, it helped the rodent/vermin population to become a lot worse, thereby impacting on the native birds.

Yes, cats are not a part of NZ's natural eco system, but neither are rodents or humans.

Here's one article. There are more if you simply Google "raglan cat killer"

Raglan cat killings annihilate local birdlife

Hi DarthKermit. I have followed the pet thread and I share your pain. I lost my beloved baby boy Boots two years ago and it was only a few months ago that it started to become bearable, and then only because of the new cats who have helped fill the void. I haven't forgotten Boots and I never will. That would be hard to do in any case since the house is full of pictures, videos and screen-savers of him. But at least I can remember him now without becoming overwhelmed by sorrow. All I can tell you is that it does get better with time, but it can take a lot of time. My new cats haven't replaced him and I didn't set out to get new cats. It just happened but now I am very glad it did. I haven't posted pictures of Boots up to now because it was still too raw for me to share publicly but I will see if I can dig something out. He took great photos and fortunately I have a lot of them.

Thank you for your kind words. Blackie has been gone for 37 days as of today. I still feel so bad about him. Every time I go out to visit his grave in the garden, I have a little sob.

I'm so looking forward to getting our two new kittens in a few weeks. It's not about replacing the late cat, but giving a home and love to two animals who need this.

My partner was the one who encouraged me to go ahead and get some new kittens. By the time we get them, it will be two months since Blackie left this world, so it should be a bit easier by then.

How long did you have Boots for? I'd love to see a pic or two of him when you're ready to upload them. smile
