Hi, apologies if this is the wrong section to post this in but it's the only one that seemed fitting for the topic. I bought a macbook pro at duty free in Sydney Airport in about March last year. As my 1 year limited warranty is almost up with Apple, I was wondering if I should invest in Applecare or if my macbook is covered by the CGA even if I bought it in Sydney Airport. Any help/info would be appreciated.

CGA is only for items purchased in NZ.

Applecare is your only option. No local CGA for products bought offshore.

Australia has their own CGA though don't they? Or does that only apply to citizens living in Oz and making a claim from Oz?

I couldn't see it making any difference whether you're a citizen or not, it'd simply be that you would have to deal with in Australia.

The CGA and laptops is a bit of a tough area anyway - while the CGA in NZ is a great piece of legislation but how long is fair for a laptop? For something that's used 8 hours a day, charged every night and carried around and comes with a 1yr factory warranty I'd be wary about relying on the CGA as it's not a warranty per se.

The rate of failure on the newer MBP's would be fairly minimal I would've thought, there's little moving parts in them now other than fans..

I guess SSD or video card failures but I haven't read any articles recently suggesting otherwise, though it could be too early to tell

I guess you'd need to ask yourself whether its worth paying for Applecare when you might not even use it at all

If I am in New Zealand and I buy something Air-side (traveling International) via Duty Free does the New Zealand CGA still apply?

Turns out im about 15 days out of warranty. Not sure if Apple will let me purchase applecare anymore but was just going to give it a shot. Do you think its worth purchasing Applecare or should I just insure?

Yes, you are still physically in NZ even though you are duty free/past customs

You can't purchase AppleCare. It won't actually physically apply to your serial number any more. If it does kark out, you're up for a trip to Sydney to make an ACL claim.

This is correct; AppleCare must be purchased within the standard 1 year warranty. Outside of that, coverage will not apply.

The OP will be covered by Australian Consumer Law, but would need to deal with Apple Pty in Australia for this. I doubt the OP will have an issue getting any problems which arise fixed.
