I found this article and the use of "bait packages". At least two cities in California use them. GPS trackers are now in the $100 range, so not expensive.

http://lawofficer.com/news/police-deploy-bait-packages-with-gps-to-fight-holiday-thefts/

"In offering a different kind of 'surprise' holiday gift this season, law enforcement agencies in Sonoma County, California are using 'decoy' packages with GPS-tracking inside to catch thieves stealing from doorsteps, according to a Press Democrat news report.

Sgt. Paul Gilman of the Petaluma Police explained, 'We find a way to make sure that the GPS can work inside the package. If you open it up, it might look like it’s a number of different things.'

And in giving fair warning to would-be holiday thieves, Sgt. Gilman added, 'You may not know until you get stopped on your way home that you’ve stolen a device that has GPS in it.'

Gilman is unfortunately qualified to speak on the matter, as he was himself a victim of package theft. About this time last year, Gilman ordered presents for his team on the police department. He received a delivery message that a package had been left, but found nothing when he got home.

The package was stolen 'within 10 minutes of being dropped off,' Gilman reported. The thief was caught a few days later trying to steal another package."

Easy peasy.

Perhaps the police should try it here. I read this terrible story in Huntly.

After being burgled  When I go away on holiday now, I leave a Bottle of Jim Bean Black locked in a glass cabinet next to my TV, that also happens to be 1/2  anti freeze. Alcohol is one of the most likely item to be stolen so Maybe the police can bust them turning up at hospital with organ failure.

Now that you've made this post admitting that you've set up a "man trap", the police are also quite likely to bust you to face a manslaughter charge.
To make matters worse, the victim might be someone you know, a child etc.

When I head on holiday I use raspberry pi's with cameras as burglar alarm.

Have Motionos on some spare SD cards so just insert and boot up and leave. If motion detected get photos emailed to me.

The only way we'll know if it is a true story will be the inevitable day that cruxis gets pissed and forgets which bottle is which.

A Claymore mounted just under the bottle triggered by a pressure plate would have a more salutary effect and guarantee one less crim...! cool

The thing is how is he going to be traced by a forum post?

What he does in his house is his business he can set traps if he wants to and the police wont be able to charge him with anything.

They certainly shouldn't be able to - if you get munted whilst undertaking a house invasion, that should be entirely tough luck on you for being a criminal, but I suspect that in NZ the criminal will win out over the home owner in such a scenario.

I don't have special knowledge in this area but I very much doubt that the above is true. If someone gets hurt or killed in a trap you intentionally set, I think you are very likely to be prosecuted, even if it is in your home and even if the victim broke in.

I kind of like the idea of you getting pissed and drinking from the wrong bottle. Setting up deadly traps is crossing a line. If you put something in the grog that causes severe diarrhoea but no permanent damage, that is justice and  it is probably okay. Poisoning someone is not.

I've had packages that have been taken from my doorstep (visible from the road near a busy train station). Since getting the Ring Doorbell I've seen suspicious people however no more packages stolen.

The Couriers have now learnt to put packages around the corner for me in a hidden place and to ring the doorbell to say "I've left the package around the corner".

Yeah cos killing someone trying to nick my TV is completely fair and proportionate :/

PS: And for the record I have suffered from about 6 different burglaries in my life - so I know what it feels like to have my home invaded and stuff taken - but talking about ending someone for it is just keyboard warrior bs.
