Wow. What a catastrophe. 850 Years of history gone! 12 Million people visit this annually.
Doesn't look terror related.

Was fortunate enough to see it in 2017.

Mayor was just saying they have recovered a lot of the artwork at least and they intend to rebuild it
I bet that builder is going to be in the merde.
So sad - such a beautiful building. We were two of the 12 million last May. I see they are saying the firefighters don't think they'll be able to put it out.
No guarantee Notre-Dame will be saved, authorities say.
The French deputy interior minister has said saving Notre-Dame “is not certain,” according to AFP.
It follows a similar announcement from French fire services moments before. They said they are “not sure” if the fire can be stopped.
Keep calm, and carry on posting.

it is incredibly sad to see this historic building burn,
but Europe has significant experience in rebuilding ancient medieval buildings that have been gutted by fire.... I suspect this will be rebuilt, although it will take years if not decades..

Yep. I have a hunch it'll be back.
Crosses "Notre Dame cathedral" off bucket list.

Was there in 1980 on my OE. Fabulous building. For those interested here is Wiki's information including today's fire. Notre-Dame de Paris
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
gzt: News saying a symbol of french culture and history and I'm thinking a symbol of selecting the cheapest contractor.
But seriously, this is something that happens happens regularly during renovation of old buildings. The fire risk is massive, and construction has a million potential ignition sources. Small fires even on normal construction sites are relatively common and probably underreported.
Fire risk management failure. All too common in historic renovations.
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
I doubt this was caused by smoking. Construction sites draw vandals like flies. It won't surprise me if it turns out to be arson. At best, an improvised electrical connection setting off some spilled solvent.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos

Depends how long you live I guess. I don't see it being rebuilt in my life time.
