Must be a pretty big and targeted attack for them to be putting this out to the media.

Probably has been going on for some time.

Despite the Aussie government refusing to name names, ABC News is reporting it is Chinese state sponsored hackers.

Believable considering how relationships between the two countries are at the moment.
But who knows what the full story really is and why it is seen as so bad as to go public?

They need to treat state sponsered cyber attacks the same as as if were a bombing raid. Aussie needs to respond with a strike back on the state that is responsible assets.

It will be fine we all know that they won't get in because of the crappy NBN, it just doesn't have the capacity, and if they do get in, well the NBN will probably fall over.

I'd really like to see more details. My level of trust in anything Scotty Morrison says is pretty low.

I don't have any personal feeling of dislike for Morrison. My trust level is the accumulated effect of his Trump relationship and the whole bush fires response & Hawaiian holiday thing.

You are ascribing to Mr Morrison the quality of assessing, interpreting and disseminating messaging that suits a purpose other than to describe this situation. Personally I believe Mr Morrison of simply passing on what he has been told by 'cybersecurity experts' within his government. Mr Morrison is not capable of doing anything more than this, on this subject.

The cyber attack announced yesterday is only successful against organisations that have not applied existing software updates — and the main vulnerability exploited has been known about for over a year.

That's just the federal government. State governments are no better - when they bother to actually audit, let alone patch.

My trust level of anything Scotty from Marketing says is even lower, the accumulated effect of living here. At least I can say I voted for Jacinda Ardern.

Unfortunately, I believe you may be quite naive. The Coalition wouldn't disseminate information unless it met their purposes. On the subject of COVID-19 for example, "Mr Morrison" disseminates opinions that going to the footy is perfectly safe. Further discourse on this topic would quite squarely put it into the realm of the politics forum though.
