I am currently writing a review of a Synology NAS and will publish it soon. I am going to link this survey from the content later but just to give you folks a heads up - fill in this Synology survey and be in to win a Synology DS220+.

Too difficult. They turned a pretty simple survey into a sob-story writing contest to help their marketers, all for a chance to win a DS220+.

on, where do you store the 3 most types of files.

I have spotify, so no music!!!

My NAS is actually mostly used as a backup to OneDrive and Google Drive!!!

The little things make the biggest difference.

I filled it in, only took about 3-4 minutes and have been considering moving my photo backups from the cloud to something locally so this would be a nice option to run with :)

I for one would like to say thanks for the heads up! I'd happily take a free NAS, so filled in the survey, even if a couple of the questions didn't quite have options that fit my current setup (old PC converted into home server with the help of duct tape, string and the power of prayer... it's hella noisy but does the job :D )

if I get a free NAS for spending a few mins and letting them have an email address (which is a throwaway anyway), I'm happy with that :)

I'm not writing a novel though, and unfortunately they're the ones who usually win these things.

Are they really going to read every answer to that question ?

We should never be giving out our main email address to marketers , use you junk gmail adress you have for this sort of thing.

saw that, too. so this isn't really a lottery, but who can come up with the best 'answer' based on their evaluation.

I filled in most of those 5 answer boxes with a single sentence. One answer had two sentences. I used full stops though, just to show passive-aggression...

Yes it's a marketing ploy. no one gives away something for nothing so of course they want something from entrants. Its not difficult to use a throw away email address if you don't want their spam clogging up your main account.

The feedback in this thread is disappointing.

Company wants to give away free product worth $500+
Company requires some a few words and email in exchange for chance to win.
People complain a few words and an email are not worth exchanging for chance to win.

I'll gladly submit a few words and my email (you can probably find freely online if you look hard enough) in exchange for a free NAS!

Appreciate the opportunity really. Not something I could ever justify to afford myself.

Oh bugger it. I was reluctant to reply given that any reply longer than 2 sentences would be ironic in the context of me complaining that the Synology survey was too difficult. But since quite a few people had an issue with my complaint, I feel I need to explain myself.

So first off - I like Synology, have been using their products for many years and currently use a ds220j.

Now, why I didn't like this survey - and frankly I'm not sure why I even bother writing about it but it's lunch break so what the hell.

It's a regional survey across a population of close to 150 million just for the four countries listed. So the chance of winning the single NAS on offer is pretty slim. Rationally you're filling it in not expecting to win anything - you're just giving some quick feedback and sharing your details. It's a reasonable expectation - you give a little bit of your time and quick feedback to a company you like and whose products you use. Goodwill is the driver here.

Where it all goes wrong is that they presume on my goodwill. "Hey, if you like us so much, how about you write a marketing spiel better than anyone else taking part in this survey so that you can win a NAS? That's a good boy!"

It's the element of competition and judging that pisses me off. You want my feedback as a valued existing customer or aprospective customer - no problem. You want to hold a "best essay on the advantages of NAS solutions" competition - I'm out.
