Media giving too much information out. Surely this could be taken against the privacy commissioner.

Video player title and text below says "Brazen thieves targeted H_____ Ave in Fendalton, Christchurch, in the early hours of July 8."

Within a few minutes I was able to easily find the address on Google street view...

I have put in a removal request on Stuff's website, mentioning that I am not the person but this should be done.

Right, so how many people would do what you have done?

- google street view until they see the fence the camera sees and then figures out where the camera is?

I think the persons supplying the footage would have been made to sign a waiver (or you at least hope they were).

if you didnt want to identify your house then dont supply the footage.

even if the address on letter boxes were not blurred.... anyone can drive down the street to see where this is.

but why would you?

^ This article originally had a photo of the house showing the street number as well as naming the street, until I put in a complaint ( House was at the time owned by a family member)

A misguided policy meant to prevent "copy cat" suicides via social contagion. Pretending something doesn't exist was never a good way of dealing with it's impact if you ask me.

You could not have any technicolour banner more effectively screaming suicide! than the ridiculous coy way media are made to dance around it here. If you want to avoid calling attention to it, this is not the way to accomplish that. If someone dies by their own hand, just say so, or say 'apparent' suicide. The current nonsense isn't fooling anyone.

but why would you?

You'll be surprised how much is on Instagram & Tiktok of offending in places with cctv, in the hope you'll get featured on the news/media.

Although ram raiding a dairy with cctv is more likely to get on TV and show off to their mates how 'great' they are.

Yes scap it. We should be able to discuss more openly why so many people are dying. I believe Aus changed the law a couple of years back on suicide reporting

There are no laws regarding suicide reporting in either Australia or New Zealand. It's a voluntary code the media organisations adhere to - one which, frankly, has outlived its purpose if it ever had one. It's pretty obvious when an article is about suicide anyway with the plethora of helplines tacked onto the end.

As for name suppression, I disagree, I think it should be expanded so while cases are before the courts all identities are suppressed until the conclusion of the trial as happens in some European countries. Protects the right to a fair trial, while being completely blind as to career, reputation, fame, and so forth. Of course with that would come the expectation that a defendant found guilty would never be entitled to name suppression.

Either have it or not but be consistent. What enrages me is those who get it because of their special status in society.
