If Burqa's actually were against NZ "custom" you would have a point, but that is not the case.

I support the expression af a diverse range of cultures and beliefs in this country. I don't suppot the narrow minded view that one culture has the right to force others based on one point of view.

As far as I was aware New Zealand custom is to accept others?
And oppressing women? I know plenty of completely independant Muslim women who choose to wear head dress. The Qur'an teaches modesty, and there are many women who choose their own definition of what that means without any opression.

I support the burqa ban, but only as part of my support for a ban on any and all religions, religious symbols, religious culture, and iconography.

want to ban burqas? fine, but also ban jewish skullcaps, sikh turbans, christian crucifixes, cathlic rosaries, churches, mosques, synagogues, etc etc

As someone who was born and raised in France, I couldn't agree more. It makes me sick to watch French news on TV and see these women demonstrate saying they wear it by choice

Exactly. If they're making a conscious choice to wear it and it's of their own free will, who am I to say if they can wear it or not, and why just focus on Islam?

I'm an atheist and a skeptic, but I also believe in religious freedoms - something that separates New Zealand from some of the Islamic countries that forces you to conform to a set dress code based on religion.

Ah - thats the thing - Any body or group that dictates a 'policy' can be seen to be oppressive.
You could argue that government is oppressive as well - but without that our society falls apart.

People 'choose' religion or have it ingrained into them from an early age so perhaps have less choice in the matter.

The burqa is sexist unless islamic men are expected to wear it as well - otherwise its just a tool to oppress women.

Agree with NonPrayingMantis and also want to add:

The woman's rights argument doesn't work in this situation. What would happen if it got banned? The woman would be worse off, in the fact that her husband/religion wouldn't allow her to leave the house not wearing one. So she's be basically kept captive in her home. If we ban religious dress, then we are just as bad as the countries which force others to follow their beliefs.
