So I've been offered a provisional place in the Batchelor of Architectural Studies for this year at Unitec, online next to the application status it just says "transfer". So what does that actually mean?

I would presume you have transfered from another course perhaps? Or maybe another school?

I'm doing my Masters of Architecture in Wgtn and have learnt that the administrators of the Architecture/Design schools here can be a little slow to update/change information at times.

If you're really worried, call them up and ask. They will know someone who will know heh. I certainly wouldn't be worried so long as it says you've got your provisional place sorted out.

Sounds pretty normal to me, I wouldn't be worried about it.

*grin* There is much more stress in your future ;) Don't start now... In other news, if i'd done my thesis in Auckland i'd probably be tutoring you in a few months. Once you've got going feel free to get in touch if you have any Architecture related queries.

Ha, tardtasticx + stress returns 31 results on the geekzone forum search.

Chill man, do yourself a huge favour and calm that mind right down somehow. Wink

Whats the difference between the Bachelor at unitec and the Masters course and vic? The Victoria one used to be a Bachelor course with honours.

They are very demanding courses, and remuneration in NZ isn't the best. Many of my friends who completed it at vic are either overseas, or not actually working in the architectural field.

I had second thoughts about doing a career in architecture because it takes so damn long before you start earning big $$$. I could do teaching. I'd enjoy that I reckon. Haha.

I don't think you do earn big (in NZ at least) unless you become an owner of the company or a partner, and then it may be around the 80k-100k mark, which isn't a lot considering the amount of work required to get registered and then working your way up. Starting off unregistered you earn from 30k. It is 8 years of study and practical work before you can get registered, and is not easy either with lots of all nighters. It isn't too different from doing medicine, but they get way better paid.
You are actually better in my opinion, learning the software, and becoming an expert in cad and revit,as they can earn big money. Not unless you go overseas, where you can earn a lot being an architect.

-Sam?

Did you do an intermediate year at uni, to get good grades, before being offered it? It is usually quite competitive to get in.

No. What on earth is that?
I'm not too scared about not getting finally accepted into the BAS, because I've been unconditionally accepted into the National Cert. of Architecture so at least I'll be able to doing something next year. That should at least give me a kickstart into professional Architecture so I can try again later for the BAS if I want to.

It's where you do your first year of of uni doing subjects like maths and science, as well as other courses you may be interested in, to get good grades, and to decide what you want to major in. Then if you apply to the school of architecture, they pick the top 40-50 applicants from that. That is how they used to do it at Vic. I think medicine also do the same. Not sure about unitec, it maybe easier to get in. Perhaps that is why the Victoria course has changed from a bachelor to a masters.

You can't just change a degree from an undergraduate degree (Bachelor) to a postgrad degree (Masters). You would need the Bachelor's degree before being granted entry to the Master's programme and even then they probably wouldn't take everyone.
