It was a manual payment made at an Napier ASB bank branch but that doesn't mean I should be the one to cover what his bank charges him
I disagree.
May I ask why you did a manual over the counter deposit? Maybe so that the funds could clear straight away in the sellers account? And you could have your item shipped sooner? Thats the only reason why I think somebody would want to do this.
A manual deposit fee is normally charged to the account owner. But as you are the one inside the bank, you should be the one to pay for the privelege of seeing a real person in a bank, not the person selling the item as he/she probably could not care less.
The very least is to pay the extra fee. Its the right thing for you as the buyer to do.
I did the over the counter deposit because I was in town and near his bank as I said in previous post I did advise him that I would be doing that and had nothing back from him until 3 days after the item was received
either advise people of the surcharge in the auction or in the initial email sent with account name/number but don't just put bank deposit in the payment method and expect me to pay your fees for you it's your account not mine...
Why should anybody advise you of the surcharge? Its common sense and everybody knows that there are costs involved if you go into a bank and depost cash. No auction is different. If you deposit cash into a bank account as payment its going to have the same effect. Are you saying then that every single auction should advise people about this?
I think it was just very wrong of you to refuse paying the charge, especially if its only $3 or something. The seller made a point of bringing it to your attention, the very least you could have done is offer to pay the charge. But to then refuse? A bit cheeky if you ask me!
What if the item you were buying was only $3? Would it be OK to pay cash over the counter for it too? If not why should any other auction be any different.
