So they have a $150 fee if your item is flagged by customs. That seems incredibly steep since I can ship a phone (for example) in myself and pay nothing (except the GST) if it is flagged by customs.

Are you sure it's only the GST? I have heard (but can't confirm) that you will be stung customs/brokerage fees of around $60-80 or so??

You have to pay a customs import transaction fee of 38.07 inc GST, and probably also duty (depending on what you are importing) as well as GST.

But if NZ Post's $150 is in addition to those charges, it's about 10 times what I was charged by another agent.

Ah thanks for that. So for something with no duties (most geek goods), it is around $40 as a handling fee, plus GST on the goods/shipping, and nothing more?

Yup, plus a charge by the company handling the package, apparently $150 in the case of NZ post.

Last time I didn't know about the rules and jet worldwide contacted me regarding some shirts I ordered from the UK which were assessed. They charged me a $15+GST 'administration fee' which is a far cry from $150. I'm not sure if they are subsidised by the retailer I used or how it works or even if they had a right to charge me the $15.

jonherries: I am waiting for some sunglasses. Used youshop. Few comments:

Login and account management via nzpost is poor.
Target delivery date is a week and a half, that is slower than apple shipping stuff from china.
Not clear how they come up with the price. Says my volumetric weight is 1.5Kg (sunglasses remember), but only paid the 500g rate...

Care to clarify on NZPost's log in failures? I find the site supremely easy to use and really like it. I also use their TradeMe share feature extensively. It really is great work by them in my opinion.

Given that you're paying Apple a premium price for nearly everything - including shipping - it is hardly surprising that they provide expedited shipping.

There are two weight dimensions given by NZPost, the parcel (actual) weight and volumetric weight which is the weight calculated by the volume (space) the box occupies.

The actual weight is what the fees are based on unless your volumetric weight is extreme in which case NZPost reserve the right to charge on volumetric weight. Fair enough if you're going to ship a feather in a fridge box.

Hmmm. It's a lot more than Prezoom's fee - IIRC it is $90 from previous pages?

The difference is that PreZoom charge the $90 fee regardless of whether Customs flags your parcel, NZPost only charges you if Customs flags it. Still quite a sting over just importing the package yourself and simply paying the GST alone, direct to Customs.

Well GST payment is not certain when importing things. They must be flagged by Customs in the first place. Of the two dozen or so items I have personally imported I have paid GST on two of them.

My experience so far:
Purchased and item (DSLR camera) through Amazon 16Sep
Item shipped to YouShop warehouse Portland, OR. 17Sep
Arrived Portland, OR. warehouse 18Sep (1 p.m.)
NZ Post contacted me 19Sep with shipped charges, paid same day.
My account at YouShop shows that the item is "Ready to dispatch" - So it's been sitting there for 7 days!
Phoned NZPost yesterday and they told my that they wait till there is a 'container load' before forwarding to NZ, but I get the impression the service was not well understood by the lady on the phone (but she was doing her best to assist)

An average of 6% of each purchase from Amazon. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on product and how many orders per month.

Should be a couple of Kindles showing on your list as of about nowish.

All I have been charged at this stage by NZPost is the shipping charge - $44 less 15% plus a $6 fee for compensation cover (Signature required). I guess GST etc will be paid at this end on clearance.
BTW this was an item that was geo-locked when I first tried using my NZ address. I used my ANZ Visa card without any problem.
