I think Gareth's problem is not with the standard house hold cats but more with feral cats causing the problem how many owners near wildlife reserves actually have de-sexed cats and for that matter how many dogs are roaming in and around these areas aswell they're just as likely to attack and kill birds as cats are.....

Personally I think the world would be a much much better place if we all just removed the Gareth Morgans of the world

The website 'catstogo', and pages life 'nz without cats' is fairly conclusive, he wants all cats to go. I think what he is doing is almost verging on trolling.
Dogs I am sure cause just as much of a problem killing things, and some have even caused a lot of damage to people. Do we see them banning dogs?

There is a certain paranoia here in NZ about cats and dogs that is very odd.

Many countries have far greater numbers of both and somehow manage to live far more harmoniously with them than here in NZ.

Having seen first hand what a dog did to a child, I would be far more in favour banning dogs, at least some breeds. Feral cats and cats escaping to become feral is what needs controlling, not domestic cats in suburbs, where native birds don't live. Cats in suburbs control mouse, rats, and rats with wings. That is why people originally had cats.

I'm an animal lover, had cats and dogs. But personally, I think he's got a valid point re: cats and birds. Everyone thinks their household cat is fuzzy and innocent, but they do go out killing birds. Maybe not if you have on in an apartment building, but they are all serial killers.

I was walking passed a very posh place the other day with their very friendly family pet on the front lawn meowing for a pat as I walked passed. A second later a bird chirped and the cat went in to not so innocent killer mode. This was a household cat and a bird call I've never struck before and would consider a rear bird for this neck of the woods. They are all the same when they want food and attention, but outside they are a completely different animal.

However I personally think there's far to many cats around these days. I do strongly agree they should be all registered and chipped and a better effort made to keep the things off other peoples property. They have a much bigger impact on other animals than dogs. If it's okay for cats to kill birds all the time, I can't see the harm in teaching a dog to keep cats away permanently if they cross the fence.

My neighbour has lost a few doves due to so called household pets. Just because they don't bring their kill home most of the time, doesn't mean they are out there as a pest in the neighbourhood each day, unless you keep them locked up with a litter box.

But so are humans, we kill animals for our food too, and some people kill for other reasons.

I grew up in the UK. 60 million people, many more dogs than NZ, dogs allowed in pubs, public parks, all over the countryside including sheep farms, in National Parks and so on.

Curiously the number of children in the UK attacked by dogs is so small it never even registered on my consciousness in 37 years of living there. Here it seems to happen monthly.

Your problem is not dogs, it's the ignorance of the population regarding dogs. keeping dogs and training dogs. Also the complete lack of opportunity to socialise dogs here due to endless bans on taking them anywhere where other dogs or people might be results in poorly socialised dogs that behave badly, especially with unskilled owners owning dogs of inappropriate breed for their environment.

Would it be so bad to put contraceptives in the cat food to help limit cat numbers.
Maybe there is a place in the market for the option to get it or not.

Good point. So instead of banning cats a good step would be to treat them the same as dogs, registration, have to be under control at all times, cant roam freely onto other peoples property, and definitely have to be locked up at night.
