Aredwood: Since it is now a bit bland. I think adding the southern cross to reflect that we are in the southern hemisphere. And something to reflect our history and British roots. Like the union jack.

Wait a minute. .......

What about reflecting the indigenous roots?

Indigenous????

The Kiwi and Silver Fern, yes.

But not the Tiki, by the definition of indigenous given earlier. Possibly the Koru, as a stylised depiction of a (presumably indigenous) fern frond.

That's not too bad - although the feather can go.

.... and the Southern Cross.

Looks too much like Heli Line's branding now...

Moa bones? Haast's Eagle skull?

Geektastic: Moa bones? Haast's Eagle skull?

There's an idea... Start with that iconic black flag with the silver fern on it, then take the fern off, and add the skull and a couple of moa bones. Perhaps cross the bones over each other, for effect.

At the very least, it would look good on our next America's Cup yacht.

No to change leave it as is.  This country has better things to do than decide on another flag that tries to meet everyone's needs, as it wont.

Lets just change the shape. Only 2 countries have square flags. Let us be a third.

Or something really different like Nepal's or Ohio's!

Edit: Or Oregon, where the back image is different, instead of just being a mirror of the front.

I have thought long and hard about this and there is only one design that can truly represent.

Silver fern and southern cross are symbols I associate with NZ.  I don't care if the rest of the world associates them with NZ or not.  If the flag is unique it will achieve its purpose.

I like the idea of black or dark blue background. I'm not worried about IS associations with black. IS probably won't exist in a few years.

I personally don't like the koru aesthetically.  It has never looked right to me, it looks disproportionate.

If we think the jack doesn't represent the diversity of our society, then the same concern would apply to the koru.  To me the fern and the southern cross are more widely representative.

No. We'd only really need a new flag to tell our armies apart if we invaded Aussie. And I don't think that would be a good idea in the first place.

Well the winner has been announced. It's the only option worth considering replacing our existing option with. I am a little torn. I like the new flag design a lot, but it's still replacing something that I've known for 38 years.

I think I'll still vote to change.
