Handle9: Once again you fail a test of reasonableness. It wasn't abuse.
It was using inappropriate and racist language but very clearly not abuse.
Please yourself, I am not playing your silly games any more.
MikeB4:
It was public racial abuse of another individual
I guess you're not a fan of Eddie Murphy? 🤣

Last weekend Aussie commentator Phil Kearns made reference to the hackneyed old “Fush und Chups” phrase when talking about a NZer (in that case Andrew Mehrtens). Should he now face sanctions?
Based on what has been said, he should be sacked, publicly humiliated, unable to work in the industry again and face a life of unending misery.
Nope - he should have been commended for making the effort to pronounce the words correctly.

That would be a bit much, he's already Australian.
OK, that may be a bit countryist .....

Not surprisingly, this discussion has gone off the rails but I have been thinking about this long and hard and I have to say I am changing my mind. I think @MikeB4 is taking an extreme position, but I am moving in the direction of his argument. Why?
Let me start with where I am moving from. I enjoy certain kinds of humour, including that which pokes fun by exaggerating identity characteristics. As I previously posted, I am a fan of The Simpsons and the humour of the exaggerated stereotypes. I find Apu’s accent amusing.
I personally see no real harm in gentle ribbing based on this kind of thing. Yes, it is racist, but it isn’t horrible and it isn’t ill-intended.
What is changing my mind is the news reports I am seeing from different places around the world. Asian Americans in particular are being subjected to the most vicious and even deadly racist attacks. This has been happening all over America and it seems to be getting worse. It is terrifying and it is terrible. People are afraid to go out, or only dare to go out in disguise. It is not confined to America. Similar things are occurring in Australia and elsewhere.
The thing is, if the racism stopped at mocking foreign accents, it would not be a big deal. It would still be racism, but it would be the kind most people could probably brush off.
What I am realising is it doesn’t stop there. It starts there and then continues to grow and metastasise. At every stage, those who tolerate it allow it to morph into something worse until it finally becomes murder and genocide. This happened in Germany. It happened in Rwanda. It happened in Bosnia. It can happen anywhere.
Even ‘mild’ racism needs to be called out and examined. Not every racist comment is deserving of sacking or worse, but they should not be allowed to slide unchallenged, and that is what Mike is correctly doing. Racism is not harmless and people need to realise that.

I know you are mostly kidding..
Kearns should have faced sanctions for many many things he has said over the years, this one probably not :)
No. I was massively offended on Mehrt’s behalf. I curled up into the foetal position with a pillow over my head until well after the game finished.*
* Not really. I just thought “what a d...head. Come up with some new material.” So absolutely kidding, but what’s the difference in the two cases?

Most people with a brain can recognise the difference. If you are talking about racism then it clearly doesn't exist in Kearns case - there is no race of New Zealanders.

I've not seen any suggestion from anyone that this was acceptable.
The 'mild' racism *was* challenged, publically, by all in sundry, he has had a serious employment investigation and has been suspended as a result.
The core of the issue appears to be one of what punishment should be applied and for some, that racism has any form of scale.
Mocking of accents should probably stop, but for those who ask why the Irish, Welsh or English or Australian/Kiwi accents being mocked isn't treated the same, is that the result of that mocking is more serious for Asians for example, than Irish.

I was talking about the larger issue rather than the specific example. At first I thought @MikeB4 was taking things too far. Now I am inclined to agree with him in principle.
The difference with national accents is that they are not connect to race, making them less obvious targets for the knuckle-draggers, and Irish, Welsh, English, Australians, Kiwis, etc. are not being beaten up, stabbed, shot, chased into alleys, screamed at, or otherwise terrorised for their nationality.

Geektastic: Would there be so much complaint if the accent he copied was Welsh? Scottish? Irish? English?
I suspect not.
Or Maori or Pasifika?
I suspect not... /s
