Hasnt KFC started flogging pies too? - sure I saw a big billboard advertising a pie that they now sell.

Ive never had Georgie pie, i was about 10 when they closed the one in Nelson, takeaways was a rarity back then and i lived in Motueka so the idea of going to a pie "restaurant" over the likes of Mcd's at that age just wasn't going to happen.
I tried the Kfc pie the other day, they have a cracking special of $3 with chips and potato and gravy so i couldn't pass it up, that being said i probably won't do it again. If i see that sort of deal for Georgie pie ill give it a shot, paying ~$4 for a pie shouldn't be condoned.

Most Maccas also have a McCafe, which sells sandwiches. KFC isn't food, so that doesn't count

Another oddity - how come fish and chip shops here rarely sell pies?!

Pie, chips & gravy (or curry sauce) is a big seller in UK fish & chip shops and I would have thought a relatively easy/cheap thing to offer here that would appeal to many as an alternative to fish (and to people like my wife who do not eat fish).

The curry sauce probably wouldn't be a big seller in NZ (it's really good though...!) but I'd think the gravy option would be.

Most of the ones I've seen in Auckland are run by Chinese so they most likely don't know what pies are. Besides I've never seen a fish and chip shop sell pies..

OK - he's actually from Vietnam. Nicest pies I've eaten (rarely) in Chch, the owner is Cambodian.

Pat Lam is probably of chinese descent. Note the comment at the bottom of the article, that 70% of the entries were from Asian bakeries - who won 80% of the awards.

Yep, quite a lot of local bakeries seem to be run by Asian people these days ... maybe they're the only ones who aren't too lazy to get up insanely early and start baking. ;-)

Now I know the crap we've had haha, we used to order like 8 or 10x for a evening snack and then fridged. Had one a few months ago and it was crap and quite expensive too, more than what a bakery sold better pies for. Tasted almost like cardboard the pastry. A bit like our microwaved "Big Ben" pies you know those 6x per the Pak N Sav pack.

Haha, I +1'd your post.

There are a couple round here (and a few more I know offline) that have come to NZ only to vociferously complain that it is not like the UK (or South Africa to a much lesser extent).
If it is so great there, go back. /rant

On another note, I was out at a pub for Quiz night last week and we got talking about Chips and Curry Sauce. I think it would be a great idea - I'd be in!

(A) People like pies here
(B) People may well buy them instead of fish and chips at the same shop
(C) People like curry sauce
(D) There are lots of immigrant poms and lots of tourists on top of that

To simply ignore something because it came from somewhere else is dumb - after all, where did fish & chips come from in the first place?

There's an opportunity there for fish & chip shops to sell another product and make more money. Can't be worse than those disgusting sausages on sticks they sell.

Curry sauce is what the Welsh have with F&C's. English instead have salt and vinegar, or tomato sauce, which is more like it is in NZ.

I haven't had a pie for over 10 years.. When they are less than $1 each at the supermarket, you have to wonder what the quality of meat is like. The only good pies are those that are either home made, or made by a qulaity pie shop.
