Looks like Meta is walking away from news a well. In a statement, Facebook said its users were not coming to its platform for news and political content and that it would invest its money elsewhere.

I bet there will be cries from the media, Facebook must be made to carry our content and pay us for it. I support Meta move to walk away.

Facebook News: Meta to pull $70 million from Australian news publishers in shock announcement | news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site

In a perfect world if people want to seek out news they will do so, forcing it down a tech companies throat to serve news would be pretty extreme. That being said Meta's positioning in the market makes themselves the new newspaper in a way because of how we now share information on those platforms and they how they are designed to keep us on the platform as long as possible. There may well come a time where forcing them to present and pay for news is possible.

Thats because you are the product sold to advertisers.

And given the first two pages of every Google search are all SEO clickbait garbage these days, you're not getting a whole hell of a lot for it either.

Side note, I'm probably wrong, but I swear the guy in the middle of the pic here is Colin Craig's doppelganger.

We have that with TNVZ and RNZ. RNZ is entirely publically funded and TVNZ is entirely publically owned.

Yes, and it works well (except for Winston Peters, who believes journalists are corrupt for taking money from the journalism fund Winston Peters helped setup).

I’m still very confused why MSM didn’t give any air time to NZF during the election campaign.
Any air time they received was in negative light. This was one of the reason why Winston Peters gave the other day.

Even though NZF can be polarising, I would have expected they get fair coverage as there are still people in Democratic NZ that was going to vote for NZF, as proven by election results.

Winston Peters seems to take special delight in treating reporters with contempt. I wouldn't give him any air time either.

Sure, I get that. But fairly certain I’ve seen many posts here saying that media should be allowed to question politicians, no matter how silly the question is or no matter how many times the question was previously asked etc because media is for the benefit of the public and there’s always some public that would benefit from it.

It seems from your answer media didn’t give him air time because he didn’t like the media.

So media can pick and choose what they like?

Seems contradictory to what being stated multiple times here.

I don’t like the guy either, but doesn’t mean he should be censored, silenced, exclude on purpose etc. I would have thought his rubbish answers like “I don’t answer stupid questions” to the media, would make people want to watch the news. Look at Trump, media loved him regardless whatever rubbish he spoke.

Peters doesn't have to answer any questions he doesn't like. The media don't have to put up with gratuitous insults. Seems pretty simple to me.

I have a couple of questions:

When you refer to MSM, who are you actually referring to? One News, Newshub, Stuff, RNZ, Hearld, radio stations etc.

I personally don't know of any kiwi that uses terms such as 'MSM' (Main Stream Media) - maybe I am out of touch.

Also I know NZF got air and radio time during the election campaign, I was here.

This is pretty subjective without looking into analytics but NZF got election coverage they were invited and attended live covered debates.

Do you mean it wasn't fair that Peters didn't get as much air time as Luxon and Hipkins?

Lastly,"people in Democratic NZ".... again feels like very emotive language here, and not something I would expect to hear from a kiwi.

That's not the way I recall it. I'm sure Peters said that many times no doubt.

I'm sure Winston did too, I remember seeing some commercial somewhere (on TV, I think) about him riding a horse and saying it wasn't his first rodeo or something similar.
