Definitely agree there. I'm going to have to dig out the manual for my motherboard because I couldn't figure out how to disable the onboard SSD from the "help" provided in the setup utility (I want to try a different OS and don't want to accidentally wipe/corrupt the main one).

Edit: Good grief, the manual isn't much better. For example, "Fixed VCCGT Switching Frequency" allows me to "set a higher frequency for a quicker transient response speed".

Downloaded the bp charge app recently; while setting up the notifications, I wanted SMS and Email notifications off, leaving Push Notifications on.

However, turning any of the sub headers off will turn off the main header off. So - if Push Notifications is on, will I still get that notification or not, due to the hierarchy showing it's off? Logic/common sense tells me I won't, due to the way it's visually designed/laid out.

Called bp charge - the CSO thinks it will work. I emailed them the above screenshot and video showing how the toggle for headers turn to off, if not all 3 subheaders are on. And turns back to on when all 3 subs are on. They said they'll pass to the app developer for consideration, and perhaps change in the next planned update.

IMO a brain-dead design.

Visual Studio having a little "in progress" animation in the status bar... that keeps animating even when it's not in progress. I had another window on top of VS but positioned so I could see the status bar. Eventually I wondered why it was taking longer than usual, so I switched back to VS only to find it sitting on "are you sure?".

Brain dead software, or maybe brain dead documentation. Google's docs for a feature say to do X in the "search widget". It turns out that the thing on Google's website, the block - widget, if you like - that you type your searches into, is in fact not a "search widget". Of course they don't bother to tell you that, and you're just expected to know!

I'm starting to feel like this is "my" thread, given that I now have 4 out of 5 posts on this page...

Apple Maps on iPhone or Mac both let you search for a name in your contacts, and will give you directions. Apple Maps in the car (via CarPlay), on the other hand, ignores your contacts and requires you to know the address.

Teams...

I send a message with a URL in it. Right after sending I realise that I made a typo in the URL, so I hit Edit and fix it. This changes the text (the "caption", if you like) but the actual underlying link is still broken and there's no obvious way to fix it.

Just remove the existing link and then type/paste the new link. Works for me in my Teams -- but agree its annoying it can't be edited in place. Not even Ctrl-K seems to work in Teams when editing -- my testing just now shows Ctrl-K within a link just pops up a dialog box offering to create a new link rather than edit the existing one (which is a different behavior in other non-Electron apps).

Sadly this is quite par for the course for the crap Electron/JS apps coming out of Microsoft lately. Even the new Outlook has some annoying bugs around links too -- pasting URLs as plain text sometimes automagically converts URL text into URLs straight away which makes it hard to edit links after the fact. It's gotten to the point I now paste in Notepad, edit there, and then re-paste into Outlook.

The Westpac Australia phone App. They've updated their password specifications to require stronger passwords. All fairly standard stuff to which my current password already complies with. But can I use my current password, of course not. I must change it because they say so.

I can actually explain that one: if the passwords are stored in an encrypted format (which they should be), then Westpac has no idea whether your current password conforms to the new rules or not.

Doesn't stop them from allowing the user to enter their password and checking at that stage though. Some sites handle changes in password requirements by checking against the old hash to validate and then updating to a new hash (if they've also changed the way they hash the password) after checking the password still meets the new requirement. Westpac probably didn't want to make the process this complex though.

Password managers would solve this. Just generate a new one and off you go. I don't remember the password for any of my NZ bank logins -- it's all stored in my password manager and rotated every now and then.

Most Windows programs use CTRL-SHIFT-V as a shortcut to Paste as Text.

Not Microsoft Office apps. You had to use a right-click option to paste as text.

Microsoft has adopted this shortcut now. However, despite being announced in March 2023, it still doesn't work as expected.

Or you can simply paste, then press the Ctrl button & have to use the mouse to make the correct selection from the little pop-up menu. 🤦‍♂️

It's like they've gone back 25 years in terms of quality. Just shocking really.

Even Notepad has now been mangled away from being a text editor and exists in some horrible middle ground where it is adding features no one has every wanted in a plain text editor...

Stupid design is not limited to software. I just badly sliced my thumb while chopping kindling. Fortunately I have a fairly comprehensive first aid kit. So with blood spurting everywhere I fumbled out a Band-Aid (Johnson and Johnson) of sufficient size, only to discover that it is practically IMPOSSIBLE to unwrap the damned thing with an injured hand. I really struggled while trying to stem the flow of blood with tissue paper. I tore it one way, then the other. I used my teeth. Nothing I tried seemed to work. From past experience I thought there was a string somewhere that was supposed to open it but I couldn’t find one and everything was covered in blood anyway.

They seem to be so obsessed with keeping it sterile that there is practically no way to actually get it out. I did finally succeed but it was WAY more trouble than it should have been, especially given the circumstance. I just hope whoever is responsible for this cuts their thumb one day and needs a quick and easy bandage.
