side by side   8/10

don't let keanu reeves put you off, this a great doco on the twilight of traditional photochemical film and the rise of digital film making.

makes a good companion piece for the superb 1992 doco on cinematography, visions of light.

Die Hard 5

Worst of the series, cringe worthy in parts, 6/10 for me.

Django Unchained - 8.5/10 from me. I didn't find any of the speeches too long, and really enjoyed it.

Agreed.

Some shocking editing too.

Should have stopped at number 3.

Die Hard 5? Doh! I'm still waiting for the sequel to Hudson Hawk!

It comes between 2 and 3. Hawk was intended a parody making fun of the genre including some intentionally 'bad' editing. Hollywood didn't know how to market it - avoid the trailer. Going by the ratings few people actually got it and they decided to stick with the Die Hard franchise.

Die Hard 5 goes on my list as a movie it will be impossible to avoid therefore no need to go out and see it ; ).

I watched Skyfall last night. I'm not going to review the movie other than saying that I enjoyed it, but I have to wonder whether the movie studios have any brains when it comes to packaging.

I bought the Bond 50 box set last year which includes a space for Skyfall. The first 22 films have a black disc with a 007 logo and the title of the movie in a generic font. Skyfall is a white disc with a stylised logo and a photo of Bond shooting his gun. In other words, if you actually put the Skyfall disc into the Bond 50 box, it looks completely out of place. Why did they even leave a space if the disc doesn't match?

You'll also be pissed to find Quantum of Solace does not have the same menu as the rest of the 50 series.

Yeah I noticed that too, although that doesn't look bad on the shelf :P

Skyfall has about five previews that you need to skip over too... *sigh*

Django Unchained - 8/10

I wouldn't call myself a die hard Tarantino fan, but I've enjoyed most of his films.  When Inglourious Basterds came out a couple of years ago, I was keen to see it, but I have to admit that I wasn't all that impressed by it.  My wife, who can take or leave Tarantino, didn't enjoy it and consequently she was reticent about Django.  So it's significant that we both really enjoyed it.  At 3 hours, it's a tad too long, but it told a good story.

The highlights for me were Christoph Waltz as bounty hunter Dr King Schultz, and the scene with the KKK.  Waltz does a great job as the bounty hunter who talks his way out of most situations, and shoots he way out of everything else.  He brought a lot of heart to the film in his relationship with Django, and his responses to the scenes of slavery he witnesses.  And the KKK scene was brilliant.  If someone told me that I was going to watch a film in which the Klan turns up, and is one of the funniest scenes in the film, I would have shook my head.  But Tarantino manages to lighten the atmosphere by observing a fundamental problem for the Klan, which I don't think anyone has ever pointed out before...

X-Men: First Class - 8/10

I saw this at the cinema when it was released, and re-watched it on Blu Ray this week.  I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time, but I hit upon the problem that I couldn't put my finger on the first time I watched it.  The film does a good job as an origin story, but it feels like the last 15 minutes are a rush to the finish line, showing how the two main characters go from being friends to enemies/rivals.  To be honest, the friends side of things did seem a little bit forced, which probably didn't help the ending where they are split.  I found myself wondering whether the writers should have tried to draw out the characters a bit more, perhaps over two films, to show how the mutants came together and became a tight unit, and then show how they fell apart in a second film.  That said, I'm still looking forward to Xmen: Days of Future Past...
