Can't discriminate on marital status, so married or de facto or whatever have to be treated the same as single people.

But they aren't.

Lets say a married couple earn $100,000 each. They are individually taxed on that income.

Then one of them, say, decides that they need to return to University and get a new qualification to move their career on. It is a 3 year full time course.

Their income falls by $100,000. As a student the partner heading to university applies for some help with living expenses. Response? No, your partner earns $100,000 so you can't have any and (in so many words) go and live off them. So NOW the state says you are not an individual but a unit...

The same happens with pensions - especially overseas ones. There are many cases of people who are married to people who had careers in, say, Holland or Germany etc and who had contributory pension schemes there. When the partner who did not have that applies for their NZ super it is refused or reduced because the other partner has "too much money" in effect. Again - for tax you are individuals. For this you are a unit.

So clearly you CAN indeed discriminate on marital status if you are the government.

Housebound over-70s who can't figure out streaming AFAICT.

Fortunately I don’t turn 70 until the middle of this month - so I still have have a couple of weeks to enjoy my Netflix, ATV, Plex, VTV, Neon and Smart DNS service. Don’t know what I’ll do after that.

Meh. I read some articles in newspapers saying "A grandma..." and then you find out the person is only 40 years old. I am 55 and likely a few years away from being "granddad"

I became a grandad for the first time in my 40s. I have been married for 42 years this year and we were very young when we go married.

Yeah, we had our daughter around the 40s... That makes a huge difference.

Leave the ageism out of it.

If that was a response to my comment then it wasn't ageism, it was an observation about the demographic I know of that watches FTA TV, and in particular religiously watches the news on FTA TV, 100% are over the age of 70, and none of them use streaming. There's even splits within the household where he watches FTA TV and she's figured out Youtube and Netflix.

Edited to add: And before that gets misinterpreted again, that's not saying "if you're over 70 you can't use Netflix", it's saying "of all the people I know who watch FTA TV and get their news from it, all are over 70 and don't stream".

Many years ago a Sky employee, in the process of sending out resumes looking for a new job because they could see the writing on the wall, complained that their target market was literally dying because it was all older people who hadn't switched to streaming.

Also, this is the complaining-about-things-that-annoy you thread for cryin' out loud, if you can't have a good whinge and moan and complain here you'd have to go to (shudder) social media or something to do it.

I wasn't responding only to you but it certainly included you. I am 77, I religiously watch all the NZ news I can, including FTA, and I also stream, which completely invalidates the silly observation you were making. Sweeping generalisations like yours are never correct.

Apart from that, it is normal accepted practice here that people respond to comments in threads, including the small annoyances one. You made an assertion, I disputed it. That's how it works here.

The news reporting around Covid deaths.

Headline and tv news lead “5 deaths”, “the deadliest day yet”.

And yet when you dig a little further all died with Covid from unconnected illness. It’s like saying “all of the patients who died travelled to hospital by motor vehicle, our deadliest day on the roads”.

How many other people died yesterday?

That particular piece of reporting made me swear at the TV. Something that seems to be happening more frequently, unfortunately.

The other thing that annoys me is the media giving case numbers as if they're gospel. Prior to phase 3, only a PCR test was considered a confirmed case, so the case numbers were accurate reporting of confirmed cases.

Now that we're in phase 3, a RAT is also considered a confirmed case. So the numbers reported by the media are confirmed cases that they know about. People are bound to be testing positive at home (technically a confirmed case) and then hopefully isolating, but I bet not all of them are telling the MoH.

In fact, at work last week someone was doing RAT training. Once she finished I said "and then record it on the website". The trainer replied with "oops, forgot about that".

Also boomers watch it out of habit, think that its keeping them informed because when they were young the idea of seeing pictures on the TV from overseas at 6pm was amaaaaaazing so they made a ritual out of stopping doing what they are doing and sitting down and watching it, then they keep going with whatever is on after it.

What do you suggest as an alternative to the 6pm news?

Anything. I've not watched TV news in years.

Uninformative packaging.

We've ended up with two products - hand wash and toothpaste - that contain charcoal.

Neither has any information on the packaging at all to explain why I should want burnt wood in them and what benefits it offers.
