Geektastic: Uninformative packaging.

We've ended up with two products - hand wash and toothpaste - that contain charcoal.

Neither has any information on the packaging at all to explain why I should want burnt wood in them and what benefits it offers.

There's a story that they used to use charcoal in India (I don't know the reasons) and that when the Colgate company found out about this, they did a big marketing push for "don't use charcoal; it's terrible for your teeth and you should use our toothpaste instead". People gradually switched to the toothpaste and Colgate's profits increased. A discreet period later, they introduced toothpaste with charcoal.

Who knows how true that is though!

People who watch TV on laptops in public places without headphones.

Edit: or masks.

Also people who drink at 0900 because it's free in the lounge.

You should count yourself lucky, others will pay quite a bit extra for that woo-woo.

However, since the woo-woo damages tooth enamel you've probably got a good case for taking the toothpaste back as being unfit for purpose. In the soap it's probably harmless.

Dunno about the details of the story but the gist is right: Charcoal is quite abrasive and damages enamel, toothpaste is specifically formulated not to do so.

Unless they add woo-woo to it and it goes back to damaging enamel.

Ummm... toothpaste sans charcoal is also abrasive.

The Benefits of Charcoal Toothpaste

  • The charcoal helps to whiten the teeth.
  • It is antiviral and antifungal.
  • It can help to 'absorb' some of the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • It removes surface stains without damaging the teeth enamel.
  • It can help to prevent future staining.

The difference is that one is formulated not to damage enamel and the other isn't.

The Benefits of Charcoal Toothpaste

... as claimed by people selling charcoal toothpaste. The American Dental Association on the other hand says:

The results of this literature review showed insufficient clinical and laboratory data to substantiate the safety and efficacy claims of charcoal and charcoal-based dentifrices.

Translated: "There is no evidence that this stuff does any of what it's claimed it does".

Walking into New World in Kaikoura and finding Frosties on the shelf makes me smile. The fact that I can't find them in any supermarket I've been in on the North Island annoys me!

Wrong thread for smile, Also:

so they are around the place and I got some last time I was there I think (may have been 2 times ago). The new world that I go to has such crap selection (they don't sell banana longest shake syrup or caramel, but do sell lime - whattthe.... EWWW) that I am often doing shops up at the albany new world and pak n save to fill in the gaps.

What is not so small and annoys me is that they are unable to get the full range available for collection from a single store by doing something revolutionary like transferring stock between stores before my pickup day. They say its because the stores are independent and they choose their own products when you complain about it which is really a crap excuse when all they have to do is bring the items from the distribution center or another store to the one I want to pickup from, or before sending the delivery to my place.

Given that what you're hankering for is sugar frosted sugar-and-carb flakes, you're lucky you still can smile :-).

(Alternatively, can't you just dip the sugar flakes in sugar to get the same effect?).

No.

I can buy raw sugar plus a bunch of other sugary cereals but never Frosties. Only ever find them on the Mainland. Just one more reason I want to move there!

Kaikoura is actually closer to my house than Albany! Although it does require a ferry.

The Albany NW has stuff that no other one seems to have, I've always thought it was due to its proximity to Brownsburg and the specific tastes of the clientele there.
