Geektastic: "Young man dies in sleep"

What next?

"Woman dies walking in morning"?

Sure, it's tragic for those knew him. However it's not really news.

I'm surprised it didn't mention his neighbour's cousin was once an alblack.

29YO's without history of some medical condition don't routinely die *inexplicably - at this time* in their sleep, it's exceptional and tragic.

Newsworthy?  I don't know but it is not "dumb".  NZ is a small place. Just hope the family and friends of the deceased don't ever read this thread.

We're hard-wired to give a young attractive person more status.

Here's an article called The James Dean Effect Why is Barack Obama like Heath Ledger?

"...James Dean only had three movie roles before he died at age 24 (two of them released after his death), and yet he was quickly canonized as a transcendent talent: He was nominated posthumously for two Best Actor Oscars, and The American Film Institute ranked him 18th on their list of the greatest stars of American cinema..."

The headline does not read 'young man dies in sleep unexpectedly'.

I'd imagine that most young men that die in their sleep do so unexpectedly. They also don't need to specify that a *hot* fire burned down a building.

A local cretin took offense at a Maori carving and lopped off the erect penis that was a significant part of it. Although the nature of the dismemberment was made perfectly clear, our newspaper headlined it as a 'castration'. I guess you don't need balls to be a dick.

"Apple's iPhone 11 new feature savagely mocked" (headline in frontpage). The actual headline though is "Apple to release three new 'iPhone 11' models in September"

The feature being "savagely mocked"? A weird camera setup on the back of the phone, according to a "mock-up of what the new iPhone 11 might look like."

Also "The new phones are expected to be unveiled at a yet-to-be-scheduled September Apple event."

Fake rage on something that is not the official model but a design by a third party website of "what might look like", of a phone "expected to be unveiled" on a not-yet-scheduled event.

So, all in all, very dumb journalism.

But...they were first to publish it? Nothing else matters!

"Here's how to get the most from rewards schemes" - Stuff. TLDR - loyalty schemes are a thing. But what stood out for me was their insightful "graph" to explain coffee rewards....

I think I'd have gone with one cup per outlet and have the level in the cup varying accordingly.  Rather than whatever that mess is.

Hopefully this qualifies for this topic.

I get frequent emails from Seek with job vacancies based on some search crtieria I put in yonks ago.

(*note to self: remember to unsubscribe)

This morning's one included a vacancy for a Customer Centred Design Lead with a summary that reads:

Seek: Lead strategy work across human centred design challenges to find the latent needs, insights and opportunities to meet the needs of <company>'s customers.

My guess is that whichever candidate can understand what the heck that means will get the job.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Build a door that opens either way such that "users" don't attempt to push a pull door.  Or other general ID-ten-T error proofing.

How's never?  Is never good for you?  :-p

Sounds like a way too happy-clappy of a place for me.
