"Government to partner with Fonterra to cut coal use in the dairy sector"
When all government sectors are underfunded the government has spare money to compensate NZs biggest company
Talk about privatise the profits, socialise the costs.

In fairness, it's paid for out of a carved out fund explicitly for decarbonising industries and which is entirely industry funded through the emissions trading scheme. It's not like that money would (or potentially even could, depending how the ETS legislation is worded) have gone to hospitals and police anyway.

In fairness there are plenty of smaller businesses with much lower profits who could use this help.
For example, there are all sorts of community halls and small businesses that have gas heating in them.

And the net benefit to New Zealand's carbon reduction of replacing gas heaters in community halls will be significantly less than the equivalent of taking 120,000 cars off the road, or almost 3% of the entire carbon reduction target. It's significant bang for buck.

ALL of which could and should have been paid for by Fonterra.
This is the company that said we should be paying international prices for dairy products, ie we should get no subsidy for being the source of those products.
Meantime groups that can not afford to make the change....

All of which ultimately is being paid for by Fonterra. The government is effectively just returning some of their ETS payments on the proviso that it's used to decarbonise, which is literally the point of the ETS and the fund. They're still chipping in $790,000,000 of their money.
And part of it will be used to decarbonise on farms as well, I doubt most farmers are in a position where they can afford to make these changes.

Now calculate the tax deduction.... something small groups like scouts, wood workers guild, sports clubs, senior citizens clubs, etc etc don't get.
Is the government going to pay homeowners to put in heat pumps to get rid of fire places and gas heating , double glazing, etc ?
We are talking NZs biggest company with a net profit of over 7% of over $580 Million last year on a revenue of over $23 Billion.
We are also talking farmers who get millions in drought relief (which they help cause). We are talking decades of denial here too.
Farmers are NOT being held liable for the damage they do ecologically , that too falls back on the tax payer.
Heck, landlords were FORCED to do upgrades in rentals with threats of large fines, this was classed as capital expenditure and was not tax deductible and then they took away the interest deductions for the loans landlords took out to pay for this.
gzt: I'd like to contribute but I think this should go to politics.
Probably, although the $90,000,000 is still on topic for this subject.
Handsomedan:Today's Whiskey Tango moment was the news item that the NZ Football Ferns are looking for Pay Parity with the All Whites (alongside other women's football teams in a WC year).
Don't get me wrong - I think Pay Parity in the workplace is great. There shouldn't be a gender pay gap in a normal working environment. But this is the entertainment business. It's not a normal working environment.
I think those that bring the income and entertainment should be paid for their contribution.
The Matildas, Lionesses and USWNT all deserve to be paid handsomely for their various contributions. They sell out stadia, they entertain millions and they generate income.
The Football Ferns, on the other hand? They struggle to entertain, which in turn (in a rugby mad country) makes it hard to get bums on seats at games, which means it's a hard sell on TV and therefore they generate less income - so theoretically they should be paid less. The USWNT get bigger crowds than the USMNT at times, so they fully deserve to be paid more, in my opinion. They should be raking it in. The Lionesses (England) pack out football grounds as do the Matildas (AU Women's national team).
If they actually admit that they are in the entertainment business - which they are, then they should look at the examples of star power in the acting community. Temuera Morrison, though famous here in NZ, is not going to be able to say "I want pay parity with Brad Pitt. We do the same job". He'd get no work.
So...back to the All Whites vs the Football Ferns. The All Whites barely fill a ground - they don't deserve to be paid a fortune and I have no doubt they are not paid a fortune. But the Ferns garner even less support. It's not about skill (that's a whole other can of worms), but about acknowledging the income vs expenditure argument in the entertainment business.
Handle9: This definitely isn’t the thread for landlord whinging.
No , but maybe it shows the policies are working as intended.

When you know New Zealand butter and cheese can be bought on the other side of the world cheaper than they can be bought here in New Zealand you realise that the "international" prices we pay for these products isn't the problem. The problem lies closer to our refrigerators than it does to Fonterra. Looking at you Foodstuffs and Countdown.
Apparently though there's isn't a problem as the supermarket chains claim they are only taking a normal mark up. What they omit to tell you is they also own the middle men, the wholesalers, which is where the money is creamed off.
